The solid-state emissive boron complex with multi-step mechanochromic luminescence was designed. The crystalline sample showed gradual changes in luminescent color triggered by scratching. The design concept is illustrated.

Lanthanum magnesium hexaaluminate (LaMgAl11O19, LMA) has attracted much interest as its widely used in solid state lasers, TV phosphors and fluorescent lamps. In this paper, LaMgAl11O19 ceramic was pressureless sintered at 1650 °C for 10 h in air atmosphere using LaMgAl11O19 powders prepared by solid-state reaction at 1500 °C for 4 h. The result indicated that the synthesis temperature of LaMgAl11O19 powders was about 1500 °C. The LMA ceramic sample was dense and had a microstructure of platelet-like gains. The excitation spectrum shows two wide bands with the peaks at about 254 nm and 265 nm by monitoring the strongest 362 nm emission, and the emission spectra is consisted of a broad band emission with their peaks near 362 nm with a half-width about 5 nm exciting with 265 nm wavelength.

The structure and mechanical properties of crystalline materials of three boron difluoride dibenzoylmethane (BF2dbm) derivatives were investigated to examine the correlation, if any, among mechanochromic luminescence (ML) behaviour, solid-state structure, and the mechanical behaviour of single crystals. Qualitative mechanical deformation tests show that the crystals of BF2dbm(tBu)2can be bent permanently, whereas those of BF2dbm(OMe)2exhibit an inhomogeneous shearing mode of deformation, and finally BF2dbmOMe crystals are brittle. Quantitative mechanical analysis by nanoindentation on the major facets of the crystals shows that BF2dbm(tBu)2is soft and compliant with low values of elastic modulus,E, and hardness,H, confirming its superior suceptibility for plastic deformation, which is attributed to the presence of a multitude of slip systems in the crystal structure. In contrast, both BF2dbm(OMe)2and BF2dbmOMe are considerably stiffer and harder with comparableEandH, which are rationalized through analysis of the structural attributes such as the intermolecular interactions, slip systems and their relative orientation with respect to the indentation direction. As expected from the qualitative mechanical behaviour, prominent ML was observed in BF2dbm(tBu)2, whereas BF2dbm(OMe)2exhibits only a moderate ML and BF2dbmOMe shows no detectable ML, all examined under identical conditions. These results confirm that the extent of ML in crystalline organic solid-state fluorophore materials can be correlated positively with the extent of plasticity (low recovery). In turn, they offer opportunities to design new and improved efficient ML materials using crystal engineering principles.

Conjugated organic molecules exhibiting AIE are characterized by the strongly twisted conjugated skeleton, which could provide loose intermolecular stacking and weak π–π interactions in the solid state to generate stimuli-responsive materials.

A new square-shaped Zn(II) complex, namely, [Zn4(L)4(phen)4]?6H2O (1) (L = 2-hydroxynicotinate and phen = 1,10- phenanthroline), has been synthesized under hydrothermal condition. The crystal of 1 belongs to triclinic, space group P -1 with a = 10.773(2) ?, b = 12.641(3) ?, c = 13.573(3) ?, ? = 107.44(3)?, ? = 102.66(3)?, ? = 93.89(3)?, C72H56N12O18Zn4, Mr = 1638.77, V = 1702.8(6) ?3 , Z = 1, Dc = 1.598 g/cm3 , S = 1.045, ?(MoK?) = 1.475 mm-1 , F(000) = 836, R = 0.0472 and wR = 0.0919. In 1, four L ligands bridge four Zn(II) atoms to form a square-shaped structure, where four phen ligands are respectively located on four corners of the square. The ?-? stacking interactions extend the adjacent squares into a 1D supramolecular chain. The thermal behavior of 1 has been characterized. Moreover, its solid state luminescence property has been studied at room temperature.
