Antioxidant peptides derived from natural products have superior performance and broader application prospects. In this study, five novel antioxidant peptides were prepared from Paeonia ostii (P. ostii) seed meal, moreover the bioactive and the relationship between structure and properties of antioxidant peptides were elucidated by quantum chemical calculations. The free radical-scavenging activities were used as indexes to purify and concentrate the antioxidant peptides through five proteases and separation techniques. FSAP (Phe-Ser-Ala-Pro), PVETVR (Pro-Val-Glu-Thr-Val-Arg), QEPLLR (Gln-Glu-Pro-Leu-Leu-Arg), EAAY (Glu-Ala-Ala-Tyr) and VLRPPLS (Val-Leu-Arg-Pro-Pro-Leu-Ser) were identified by nano liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). In vitro antioxidant activity test, EAAY exhibited the highest 2, 2’-azino-bis (ABTS) and hydroxyl radical-scavenging activity of 98.5% ± 1.1% and 61.9% ± 1.3%, respectively (p < 0.01), at 0.5 mg/mL. In silico calculations were carried out using the density functional theory (DFT) with the B3LYP/6-31G* basis set. According to natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, the bioactivity of free-radical scavenging of the peptides was presumed. Moreover, the antioxidant peptides demonstrated no obvious cytotoxicity to L929 fibroblast cells. Therefore, the peptides from P. ostii seed by-products might potentially have excellent uses in functional foods, nutraceuticals and pharmacological products.

This research adopts the pancreatin hydrolysis of silk fibroin active peptide, evaluate the antioxidant activity of hydrolysates. In the process of hydrolysis of silk fibroin, by measuring the amino nitrogen content of neutral formaldehyde titration method. Find the amino nitrogen content gradually stabilized at around 0.37g/L, and superoxide free radical scavenging rate changing with time fluctuation trend, superoxide free radical scavenging rate to a maximum of 65.03% at 220min.The use of silk fibroin hydrolysis process optimization,reaction time 160min, enzyme concentration4% , substrate concentration 20mg/ml, pH 8, temperature 38°C. The hydrolysis process under the hydrolysate on superoxide radical scavenging rate of 72.73%. The scavenging rate of hydroxyl radical is 47.24%. Red blood cell hemolysis induced by H2O2 inhibition rate was 24.30%.

Objective: This study was designed to determine the Total phenol, flavonoid content, antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties of different solvent extracts of Piper umbellatum.  Methods: Different solvent extracts evaluated with DPPH radical scavenging activity and Reducing power activity.Results: The presence of phenol and flavonoid showed highly in the methanol extracts than ethyl acetate and acetone extracts. All the extracts have various level of antioxidant activity. Methanol solvent extract have good extraction and show significant antioxidant activity. The effect of reducing power of methanol extract revealed good antioxidant activity compare with other tested extracts.Conclusion: On the basis of the above results we concluded that methanol extract of Piper umbellatum whole plant extracts shows significant antioxidant activity than ethyl acetate and acetone extracts.Keywords: Piper umbellatum, Antioxidant, DPPH, FRAP assay, Polar, Non polar solvents

Chitosan with 80% degree of deacetylation was hydrolyzed by cellulase of Trichoderma viride to prepare chitooligosaccharides (COSs) by the fractionation of the COSs with ultrafiltration membrane. The antioxidant activities of the COSs were clarified in this study by reducing power and free radical scavenging ability assay by UV-VIS absorption spectrum. The results show that the COS 1 (10,000-5,000 Da), COS 2 (5,000-3,000 Da), COS 3 (3,000-1,000 Da) and COS 4 (less than1,000 Da) segments have antioxidant properties.The antioxidant activitives of the COSs increased with the increment of concentration, and they also depended on molecular weight.

<p><em>Centella asiatica</em> also known as <em>mandukparni </em>or Indian pennywort or <em>jalbrahmi</em>, which has been used as a medicine in the Ayurveda from ancient times and mentioned in many classical texts of Ayurveda. <em>Centella asiatica</em> has long been used to improve memory and cognitive function.</p><p>The study aimed to identify the phytochemicals present in different solvent extracts of <em>Centella asiatica </em>(i.e. PECA- Petroleum ether extract of <em>C. asiatica, </em>CCA- Chloroform extract of <em>C. asiatica, </em>EACA- Ethyl acetate extract of <em>C. asiatica,</em> ECA- Ethanolic extract of <em>C. asiatica, </em>HACA- Hydro-alcoholic extract of <em>C. asiatica</em>)<em> </em>and evaluate the respective in-vitro antioxidant potentials. <em></em></p><p>The phytochemical screening of extracts was done with standardized procedures and the antioxidant potential of different solvent extracts of <em>Centella asiatica</em> was assessed by its free radical scavenging activity 2, 2-diphenyl -1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) as well as hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay respectively for reducing capability.</p><p>In all different solvent extracts of <em>C. asiatica</em> revealed excellent free radical scavenging activity as revealed by 2-2- diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay with  EC<sub>50</sub> values for ECA=128.752±1.85 μg/ml, HACA=274.884±1.21 μg/ml and hydrogen peroxide assay against the standard (Butylated hydroxytoluene) BHT, with the EC<sub>50</sub> values ECA=429.69±0.92 μg/ml HACA=458.08±0.58 μg/ml while rest solvent extracts shown very less antioxidant activity.</p><p> The present study indicates that the <em>Centella asiatica</em> extracts have good antioxidant activity which can be used in stress and anxiety and also a good source to be used as natural drugs.</p>

Flavones and flavonoids are known to have potent antioxidant activity due to intracellular free radical scavenging capacities. Flavonoids are found ubiquitously in plants as a member of polyphenolic compounds which share diverse chemical structure and properties. Quercetin is among the most efficient antioxidants of the flavonoids. The antioxidant property of quercetin has been highlighted in this review. These compounds have pivotal role in treatment of diabetes, cancers and some cardiovascular diseases.

Influence of Microbial Contamination on the Antioxidant Composition and Free Radical Scavenging Effects of Fresh and Decaying Spices

This study examined the influence of microbial contamination on the antioxidant composition and free radical scavenging effects of fresh and decaying spices: Lycopersicon esculentum, Capsicum frutescens S, Capsicum frutescens T and Capsicum annum used by food vendors. Microbial load was enumerated with potato dextrose agar (PDA) using the pour plate technique, phytochemical components were determined using Folio-Ciocalteu, Aluminium chloride, acetone-hexane methods for phenolic, flavonoids and β-carotene & lycopene respectively while free radical scavenging capacity was determined using DPPH method. Decaying L. esculentum had highest microbial population of 7.14 X 105 cfu/g and fresh C. annum had the lowest microbial population of 0.72 X 101cfu/g. Microbial population in decaying spices were generally significantly higher than fresh spices. Aspergillus spp were found in all decaying spices and in fresh C. frutescens T. Microsporum spp were found in all fresh spices except in C. frutescens T and in decaying spices except in C. annum. There were significant decreases (p <0.05) in phenolic, flavonoid, β-carotene and free radical scavenging capacity contents of all decaying spices compared to fresh spices except for phenolic content in C. annum while significant decrease (p < 0.05) in lycopene content was obtained for only decaying L. esculentum compared to fresh one. Reduction in antioxidant activity and phytochemical contents could not be unconnected with the high microbial population in decaying spices because antioxidant activity and phytochemical contents significantly correlate with antibacterial activity. Thus, consumption of decaying spices as shown by our study could pose a serious health challenges due to the presence of high number of microbes detected and loss of healthprotecting ability of the spices. Objective: In this study, we were interested in qualitative, quantitative phytochemical characterization and evaluation of the antioxidant capacity of the total extracts of a plant from northern Morocco, the species selected for this study is Withania frutescens. Materials and Methods: Analysis of mineral elements by inductive coupling plasma-atomic absorption spectroscopy (ICP-AES), phytochemical screening, polyphenol and tannin assays, evaluation of antioxidant activity by the 1,2-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging method and reducing power. Results: The plant contains alkaloids, saponins, tannins, mucilages, and coumarins. It has a relatively high content of total polyphenols and tannins of 19.53±0.018 μg genetic generalized epilepsy/mg MS and 6.258±0.062 μg Eqcat/mg MS, respectively. The analysis of mineral elements by ICP-AES shows that our species is rich in mineral elements which are calcium, magnesium, and sodium, and it is devoid of metallic elements such as nickel, lead, cadmium, and cobalt. The evaluation of antioxidant activity by the DPPH free radical scavenging method shows that the half maximal inhibitory concentration of the tested extracts has an antiradical activity of about 0.056±0.008 μg/ml for the ethanol extract and 0.213±0.004 μg/ml for the methanol extract compared to the butylated hydroxytoluene value of 0.009±0.0004 μg/ml which was used as a reference. The reducing capacity test shows that methanolic extract has a high antioxidant capacity (0.213±0.006) compared to ethanolic extract (0.043±0.004) but remains low compared to ascorbic acid (0.003±0.0004) which was used as reference. Conclusion: Phytochemical analysis of W. frutescens shows that this plant is rich in high quantities of alkaloids, saponins, mucilage, tannins, and coumarins. It contains an average amount of total polyphenols and tannins that confer significant antioxidant activity to the plant studied.
