A successful enone version of an intramolecular aza-[3 + 3] annulation reaction is described here. Use of piperidinium trifluoroacetate salt as the catalyst and toluene as the solvent appears to be critical for a successful annulation. We also demonstrated for the first time that microwave irradiation can accelerate aza-[3 + 3] annulation reactions. An attempt to expand the scope of the enone aza-[3 + 3] annulation was made in the form of propyleine synthesis as a proof of concept. While synthesis of the enone annulation precursor was successfully accomplished, the annulation proved to be challenging and was only modestly successful.

Michael-type addition of stabilized phosphorus ylides to nitroolefins was accomplished under microwave irradiation for the first time. Its subsequent reaction with formaldehyde provides γ-nitro-β-aryl-α-methylene arone. The solvents, microwave time and power were screened, the best yield was got(up to 62% ).

While persistence and the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state are currently investigated in isolation, our results strongly indicate that these phenotypes represent different stages of the same dormancy program and that they should therefore be studied within the same conceptual framework. Moreover, we show here for the first time that the dynamics of protein aggregation perfectly match the onset and further development of bacterial dormancy and that different dormant phenotypes are linked to different stages of protein aggregation.

Background and Objectives: Coenzyme Q10 is an anti-aging agent whose demand is increasing progressively. There are various strategies used for increasing coenzyme Q10 production by microorganisms. In this study, for the first time, we investigated the effect of iron oxide and silver nanoparticles on coenzyme Q10 production by Gluconobacter japonicus FM10. Materials and Methods: In the first step, a preliminary experiment was set and carried out to obtain the minimum inhibitory concentrations of the nanoparticles on the strain FM10. Then the sub-MIC concentrations were used to investigate their effect on coenzyme Q10 production in the stationary and exponential phases of the growth, separately. Results: The results showed that coenzyme Q10 production increased in the presence of the iron oxide and silver nanoparticles. The silver nanoparticles induced 1.9 times higher coenzyme Q10 production. The highest level of coenzyme Q10 was induced when the silver nanoparticles were added to the culture medium at the stationary phase. Conclusion: This should be noticed that so far nanoparticles have been considered as antibacterial agents, rather than being considered to cause probable beneficial effects on the induction of useful products in the microbial world. In this regard, their potential for increasing coenzyme Q10 production has received no attention. However, our present results showed that the nanoparticles can be used to increase the production efficiency of coenzyme Q10 in Gluconobacter.

For the first time the 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) catalyzed straightforward and efficient procedure has been developed for the synthesis of 3,3′-(arylmethylene) bis(2-hydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione) derivatives starting from lawsone (2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone) and a variety of (hetero)aromatic aldehydes in ethanol under microwave irradiation. Three of nine synthesized compounds are new. This method provides notable advantages over existing procedures including use of non-traditional basic catalyst and environmentally benign solvent, mild reaction conditions, excellent yields, short reaction time and simple workup.

A new type of calix [ arene-capped (3-(2-O-β-cyclodextrin)-2-hydroxypropoxy) propylsilyl-appended silica particles (C4CD-HPS) has been successfully used as chiral stationary phase (CSP) in capillary electrochromatography (CEC) for separation of enantiomers of 1-phenyl-1-propanol for the first time. C4CD-HPS contains a chiral selector with two recognition sites: calix [arene and β-cyclodextrin. Due to the cooperative functioning of the calix [arene and β-cyclodextrin, C4CD-HPS has exhibited excellent enantioselectivity for the enantiomers of 1-phenyl-1-propanol. After the multiple phenolic hydroxyl groups in the calix [arene moieties are ionized in the running buffer, the bonded stationary phase C4CD-HPS becomes negatively-charged to provide high electroosmotic flow (EOF) in CEC. Fast and high-resolution separation for enantiomers of 1-phenyl-1-propanol has been easily achieved on C4CD-HPS. This new type of chiral stationary phase has exhibited great potential for fast enantiomeric separations in CEC.

Axenic cultivation of the myxomycete Echinostelium minutum De Bary (Echinosteliales) is reported for the first time. After more than a year of serial passage the average generation time of amoebae during the logarithmic phase is 18 h and a stationary phase yield of over 2 × 106 cells/ml is typical.

The gas chromatographic elution behaviour is reported for a total of 16 vanadium(111) and oxovanadium(1V) fluorinated β-diketonates on a column consisting of a lightly loaded, non-polar stationary phase and diatomite support. The superiority of the vanadium(111) chelates is shown to include electron-capture detection. Detection limits of 14 chelates are given for the flame ionization detector. Separation of the two oxidation states of a metal by gas-liquid chromatography is demonstrated for the first time.
