In an approach to acclimate ourselves to the recent ecological consciousness trends, a lead free piezoelectric material, bismuth sodium barium titanate (Bi0.5Na0.5)0.94Ba0.06TiO3 (BNBT), was considered as an environment-friendly alternative to the PZT system. A perovskite BNBT was synthesized by the conventional bulk ceramic processing technique.La2O3 as a dopant was incorporated into the BNBT system up to 0.025 mol, and the doping effects on subsequent piezoelectric and dielectric properties were systematically investigated. In the case of La2O3 addition, the formation of grain boundary coherency was remarkably increased, and the sintered density was increased with increasing La2O3 contents. Piezoelectric and dielectric properties were shown to have the maximum value at 0.02 mol of La2O3 addition. La3+ ions were believed to act as a softener in the BNBT system and to enhance dielectric and piezoelectric properties in this study.

Single perovskite phase PMN-PT powders had been synthesized using molten salts method. The powders of PMN-PT synthesized by MSS had submicrometer particle size and high sinterability, which beneficial to an enhancement of the densification process and a decrease of the sintering temperatures. These advantages have an important bearing on the dielectric properties of these materials. The density of ceramics sintered at 1175°C was up to 98% of the theoretical density. These ceramics had excelled dielectric and piezoelectric properties.

In situ reactively sputter deposited, 300-nm-thick Pb(Zrx, Ti1−x)O3 thin films were investigated as a function of composition, texture, and different electrodes (Pt,RuO2).X-ray diffraction analysis, ferroelectric, dielectric, and piezoelectric measurements were carried out. While for dielectric properties bulklike contributions from lattice as well as from domains are observed, domain wall contributions to piezoelectric properties are very much reduced in the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region. Permittivity and d33 do not peak at the same composition; the MPB region is broadened up and generally shifted to the tetragonal side.

(Na1-xBax)(Nb1-xTix)O3 (NNBTx; x=0.0-0.21) solid-solution ceramics were synthesized and their crystal structure, dielectric properties and piezoelectric properties were investigated. The crystal structure at room temperature of NNBTx varied from orthorhombic to tetragonal with increasing BaTiO3 content x. The phase boundary between orthorhombic and tetragonal at room temperature was confirmed BT content between x=0.08 and 0.09. For x>0.05, it was found that the Curie temperature was decreased with increasing x. The highest electromechanical coupling factor, kp, and the largest piezoelectric constant, d33, were obtained at x=0.09-0.10.
