Partially aligned and oriented polyacrylonitrile(PAN)-based nanofibers were electrospun from PAN and CNTs/PAN in the solution of dimethylformamide(DMF) to manufacture the carbon nanofibers. The as-spun nanofibers were hot-stretched in a temperature controlled oven to enhance its crystallinity and molecular orientation. Therefore it were stabilized at 250 ( under a stress, and carbonized at 1000 ( in N2 atmosphere by fixing the length of the stabilized nanofiber to convert them into carbon nanofibers. With the hot-stretched process and with the content of CNTs, the mechanical properties will be enhanced correspondingly. The crystallinity of the stretched fibers confirmed by X-ray diffraction has also increased. For PAN nanofibers, the improved fiber alignment and crystallinity resulted in the increased mechanical properties, such as the modulus and tensile strength of the nanofibers. It was concluded that the hot-stretched nanofiber and the CNTs/PAN nanofibers can be used as a potential precursor to produce high-performance carbon composites.

This study aims to investigate the applicability of a hybrid electrochemical sensor composed of cork and graphite (Gr) for detecting caffeine in aqueous solutions. Raw cork (RAC) and regranulated cork (RGC, obtained by thermal treatment of RAC with steam at 380 °C) were tested as modifiers. The results clearly showed that the cork-graphite sensors, GrRAC and GrRGC, exhibited a linear response over a wide range of caffeine concentration (5–1000 µM), with R2 of 0.99 and 0.98, respectively. The limits of detection (LOD), estimated at 2.9 and 6.1 µM for GrRAC and GrRGC, suggest greater sensitivity and reproducibility than the unmodified conventional graphite sensor. The low-cost cork-graphite sensors were successfully applied in the determination of caffeine in soft drinks and pharmaceutical formulations, presenting well-defined current signals when analyzing real samples. When comparing electrochemical determinations and high performance liquid chromatography measurements, no significant differences were observed (mean accuracy 3.0%), highlighting the potential use of these sensors to determine caffeine in different samples.

Optimal intestinal development in gilts is a prerequisite for a better farrowing and a higher feed intake in lactation, and these are important facets in improving animal welfare for sows in a high-performance situation. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of a fiber-rich diet on these topics. Studies with 20 male Topigs castrates and a performance study with 38 female siblings were conducted. Pigs in both of the groups were offered either a control diet (CG) or a high fiber diet (FG) during the second half of the rearing phase (~97 kg BW) until 7 days a.p. At the time of the insemination of the gilts (body weight >170 kg), the castrates were slaughtered and the morphological parameters of the gastrointestinal tract were taken. In the performance study, the feed intake as well as the number and weight of the live and stillborn piglets and the weaning weight of the litters were recorded. The results indicated that the high fiber diet with a greater swelling capacity was beneficial to the development of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach weight CG = 714 g, FG = 812 g, p = 0.007), increased the litter weight (CG =15.9 kg, FG = 20.6 kg, p = 0.045) and resulted in a higher feed intake during lactation overall (CG = 196 kg, FG = 211 kg, p = 0.035).

Abstract Pentacene, an organic molecule, is a promising material for high-performance field effect transistors due to its high charge carrier mobility in comparison to usual semiconductors. However, the charge carrier mobility is strongly dependent on the molecular orientation of pentacene in the active layer of the device, which is hard to investigate using standard techniques in a real device. Raman scattering, on the other hand, is a high-resolution technique that is sensitive to the molecular orientation. In this work, we investigated the orientation distribution of pentacene molecules in actual transistor devices by polarization-dependent Raman spectroscopy and correlated these results with the performance of the device. This study can be utilized to understand the distribution of molecular orientation of pentacene in various electronic devices and thus would help in further improving their performances.

The European Open Science Cloud-Synergy (EOSC-Synergy) project delivers services that serve to expand the use of EOSC. One of these services, O3as, is being developed for scientists using chemistry-climate models to determine time series and eventually ozone trends for potential use in the quadrennial Global Assessment of Ozone Depletion, which will be published in 2022. A unified approach from a service like ours, which analyses results from a large number of different climate models, helps to harmonise the calculation of ozone trends efficiently and consistently. With O3as, publication-quality figures can be reproduced quickly and in a coherent way. This is done via a web application where users configure their queries to perform simple analyses. These queries are passed to the O3as service via an O3as REST API call. There, the O3as service processes the query and accesses the reduced dataset. To create a reduced dataset, regular tasks are executed on a high performance computer (HPC) to copy the primary data and perform data preparation (e.g. data reduction, standardisation and parameter unification). O3as uses EGI check-in (OIDC) to identify users and grant access to certain functionalities of the service, udocker (a tool to run Docker containers in multi-user space without root privileges) to perform data reduction in the HPC environment, and the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) Infrastructure Manager to provision service resources (Kubernetes).

Abstract Vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) has shown potential to significantly reduce the manufacturing cost of high-performance aerospace composite structures. In this investigation, high fiber volume fraction, triaxially braided preforms with through-the-thickness stitching were successfully resin infiltrated by the VARTM process. The preforms, resin infiltrated with three different resin systems, produced cured composites that were fully wet-out and void free. A three-dimensional finite element model was used to simulation resin infusion into the preforms. The predicted flow patterns agreed well with the flow pattern observed during the infiltration process. The total infiltration times calculated using the model compared well with the measured times.
