The effects of several sol–gel process parameters such as acid catalyst addition and the heat treatment procedure on porosity and anticorrosive properties were investigated for phosphosilicate sol–gel hybrid coatings prepared from 3-[(methacryloyloxy)propyl] trimethoxysilane (MEMO) and bis-[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] phosphate (BMEP).

AbstractFluorinated and photo-imageable precursors are synthesized through a Barbier-Grignard reaction for 1550-nm window. The precursors are used for the sol-gel process of integrated optic components for silica-on-silicon technology. Material compositions and process parameters are optimized to achieve internal absorptions >0.1 dB/cm and propagation losses of about 0.5 dB/cm at 1550 nm. Compact 1×16 Beam splitters are designed and fabricated which exhibit >0.3 dB power uniformity, >0.1 dB PDL and 1.5 dB coupling loss. By hybrid integration of the passive splitters and in-house fiber amplifiers, amplifying splitters are demonstrated at various signal intensities.

In this work we investigate magnetocaloric effect and heat capacity of Gd cold rolled ribbons. Such materials are easy to produce, they are flexible and convenient for using in magnetic cooling devices. It is shown that the magnetocaloric effect is strongly dependent on thickness of the ribbons. Severely rolled ribbons demonstrate rather a small magnetocaloric effect. However, a special heat treatment procedure makes it possible to enhance the effect up to the value observed in polycrystalline Gd.

Macroporous Ca12Al14O33(C12A7) mayenite monoliths have been successfully prepared via a sol-gel process in the presence of propylene oxide (PO) and poly (ethyleneoxide) (PEO). Gelation of CaO-Al2O3binary system with nitrates salts as additional precursors is accelerated by PO as an acid scavenger, while PEO works as a phase separation inducer to mediate the phase separation of the system. Appropriate PO and PEO amounts allow the formation of monolithic xerogel with interconnected macropores and co-continuous skeletons. The resultant dried gels are amorphous and the single crystalline phase Ca12Al14O33mayenite forms after heat-treatment at 1100 °C in air, while the macrostructure is preserved with a porosity as high as 78% and smoother and denser skeletons.

AbstractThis work is about the production of hybrid coatings of the system SiO2-PMMA (PMMA, polymethylmethacrylate). These materials have interesting mechanical and chemical properties useful for anticorrosive and wear resistance applications. SiO2-PMMA hybrids were obtained by the sol-gel traditional process, using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and methylmethacrylate (MMA) by Aldrich Co, as starting reagents. The SiO2:PMMA ratio was varied from 0:1 to about 1:1 at air atmosphere deposition. The coatings were obtained on acrylic sheets and silicon wafers. A diversity of coatings with chemical composition ranging from SiO2 and PMMA to obtain the SiO2-PMMA hybrids were obtained. Infrared (IR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), were performed to determinate structural and morphological behavior.

In this paper, 2.5D SiO2f/SiO2 composites were fabricated via sol-gel process employing 2.5D braided silica fiber fabrics as reinforcements and high pure silicasol as slurry. The process parameters are optimized and the optimal parameters are as follows: the silicasol of 30.8 wt. % as slurry, microwave drying, and sintering at 900 °C. Utilizing the optimal process parameters, the density and the flexural strength of the composites can reach 1.65 g•cm-3 and 80.68 MPa respectively. Dielectric properties of the 2.5D SiO2f/SiO2 composites were also measured, and the real part of the permittivity is 3.40 at 5 GHz. The excellent mechanical and dielectric properties of the 2.5D SiO2f/SiO2 composites can well meet the requirements of radome materials.

Mullite whisker was prepared at low temperature via non-hydrolytic sol-gel (NHSG) process combined with molten salt method. The influence of heat treatment temperature was studied on the morphology and the microstructure of whisker, and its growth mechanism was also described. The results show that the mullite whisker appears at the lowest temperature of 750 °C, and optimized mullite whisker can be prepared at 850 °C with the growth direction of [00, whose diameter is in the range of 170~300 nm with the aspect ratio of >30.

In this paper, we report preparation of hydrophilic hybrid nanocomposite coatings on glass substrates using Zinc acetate solutions based on 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS), epoxy resin, aromatic amine (HY850), polyethylene glycol (PEG) and surfactant (polyoxyethylene(4)laurylether) by the sol-gel process. Furthermore, the effects of PEG addition to the precursor solutions on the hydrophilic property and microstructure of the resultant coating film were studied. The hydrophilic behavior study of the synthesized hybrid was performed by adding different amounts of polyethylene glycol precursor to the hybrid solution. Experimental results show that, among different amounts of PEGs, the best results are obtained by addition of PEGs (400) to the hybrid solution which can decrease the water contact angles down to 16 and using surfactant down to 0, and increase the free surface energy. Coated glass exhibits a higher strength than uncoated glass. Attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopic (ATR-IR) technique was used to characterize the structure of the hybrid films. The chemical structure of obtained network affects morphology of the coating. The morphology of the hybrid coatings was examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The hybrid systems have a unit form structure and the inorganic phases were in the nanosize scale,
