In the past few decades, enormous efforts have been made to synthesize covalent polymer nano/microstructured materials with specific morphologies, due to the relationship between their structures and functions. Up to now, the formation of most of these structures often requires either templates or preorganization in order to construct a specific structure before, and then the subsequent removal of previous templates to form a desired structure, on account of the lack of “self-error-correcting” properties of reversible interactions in polymers. The above processes are time-consuming and tedious. A template-free, self-assembled strategy as a “bottom-up” route to fabricate well-defined nano/microstructures remains a challenge. Herein, we introduce the recent progress in template-free, self-assembled nano/microstructures formed by covalent two-dimensional (2D) polymers, such as polymer capsules, polymer films, polymer tubes and polymer rings.

The title compound, (5,10,15,20-tetra-4-pyridylporphyrinato)zinc(II) 1,2-dichlorobenzene disolvate, [Zn(C40H24N8)]·2C6H4Cl2, contains a clathrate-type structure. It is composed of two-dimensional square-grid coordination networks of the self-assembled porphyrin moiety, which are stacked one on top of the other in a parallel manner. The interporphyrin cavities of the overlapping networks combine into channel voids accommodated by the dichlorobenzene solvent. Molecules of the porphyrin complex are located on crystallographic inversion centres. The observed two-dimensional assembly mode of the porphyrin units represents a supramolecular isomer of the unique three-dimensional coordination frameworks of the same porphyrin building block observed earlier. The significance of this study lies in the discovery of an additional supramolecular isomer of the rarely observed structures of metalloporphyrins self-assembled directly into extended coordination polymers without the use of external ligand or metal ion auxiliaries.

‘Gelification and soapiness’ looks at the third class of soft matter: ‘self-assembly’. Like the colloids of inks and clays, and the polymers of plastics and rubbers, ‘self-assembled’ soft matter also emerges as a surprising consequence of Brownian motion combined with weak intermolecular forces. Like them, it also leads to explanations of a very rich world of materials and phenomena, such as gels, foams, soaps, and ultimately to many of the structures of biological life. There is an important distinction that needs to be made between one-dimensional and two-dimensional self-assembly.

An influence of geometrical orientation of two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets on long-term rheological self-assembly with the aid of H 2 O molecules is investigated by positronium lifetime spectroscopy. It is found that self-assembly is accelerated for the well self-assembled sample due to in-plane ordering of 2D nanosheets. The acceleration of self-assembly is further enhanced for the sample prepared by uniaxial pressure compaction owing to stacking of 2D nanosheets with a highly ordered state. The present results evidence that self-assembly is significantly influenced by local geometrical orientation of 2D nanosheets in layered nanoparticles.

Two-dimensional poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) films with wavy patterns were studied in order to investigate reversible and irreversible wetting effects. Pre-strained, surface oxidized layers of PDMS were used to form relieved wavy geometries, on which hydrophobic functionalization was carried out in order to produce irreversible wetting effects. Wavy-patterned PDMS films showed time-dependent reversible wetting effects. The degree of surface wettability could be tuned by the choice of wavy groove geometries. And the groove geometries were controlled via O2 plasma treatment and mechanical pre-straining. The pre-strained, buckled PDMS films were applied to the fabrication of hydrophobic polystyrene nano-patterns using colloidal self-assembly, where the colloids were arrayed in two-dimensional way. The wavy polystyrene films were found to be more hydrophobic relative to flat polystyrene films. The grooving methodology used in this study could be applied to enhancing the hydrophobicity of other types of polymeric thin films, eliminating the need for chemical treatment.
