A new 2D Pb2+-based coordination polymer emits intense greenish phosphorescence in the solid state under ambient conditions with a quantum yield of 1.5% and a phosphorescence lifetime of 4.17 ms.

In recent years, N-heterocyclic carboxylate ligands have attracted much interest in the preparation of new coordination polymers since they contain N-atom donors, as well as O-atom donors, and have a rich variety of coordination modes which can lead to polymers with intriguing structures and interesting properties. A new two-dimensional coordination polymer, namely poly[[μ3-2,2′-(1,2-phenylene)bis(4-carboxy-1H-imidazole-5-carboxylato)-κ6 O 4,N 3,N 3′,O 4′:O 5:O 5′]manganese(II)], [Mn(C16H8N4O8)] n or [Mn(H4Phbidc)] n , has been synthesized by the reaction of Mn(OAc)2·4H2O (OAc is acetate) with 2,2′-(1,2-phenylene)bis(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid) (H6Phbidc) under solvothermal conditions. In the polymer, each MnII ion is six-coordinated by two N atoms from one H4Phbidc2− ligand and by four O atoms from three H4Phbidc2− ligands, forming a significantly distorted octahedral MnN2O4 coordination geometry. The MnII ions are linked by hexadentate H4Phbidc2− ligands, leading to a two-dimensional structure parallel to the ac plane. In the crystal, adjacent layers are further connected by N—H...O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional structure in the solid state.

Abstract Based on a semirigid tricarboxylate ligand 5-((4-carboxyphenoxy)methyl)benzene-1,3-dioic acid (H3L), a new Pb(II)-based coordination polymer formulated as [Pb(HL)(H2O)](H2O) (1) was synthesized under solvothermal conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray structural analysis, power X-ray diffraction, and elemental analysis. Compound 1 is a two-dimensional layered structure formed by the connection of the one-dimensional Pb(II)-based secondary building unit chains with the partly deprotonated HL ligands, which are further extended into three-dimensional supermolecular structures through the H-bonds. Furthermore, the size of the as-prepared 1 could be downsized into the nano region through a simple ultrasonic method. Finally, the antilung cancer activities of 1 and the nanosized 1 have been probed via the MTT assay against three human lung cancer cell lines (A549, H1299, and PC9).

A novel three-dimensional coordination polymer, namely, poly[[diaquabis(μ-4,4′-bipyridine)bis{μ3-5-[(2-carboxyphenoxy)methyl]isophthalato}tricadmium(III)] dimethylformamide monosolvate 2.5-hydrate], {[Cd3(C16H9O7)2(C10H8N2)2(H2O)2]·2C3H7NO·5H2O} n , was obtained by the reaction of ether-linked 5-[(2-carboxyphenoxy)methyl]isophthalic acid (H3 L) with CdII salts in the presence of 4,4′-bipyridine (bpy) under solvothermal conditions. In this complex, the CdII centres are connected by the carboxylate ligands to form two-dimensional wave-like layers, which are pillared by bpy ligands and extended into a rare three-dimensional (3,6)-connected sqc27 framework. The complex demonstrated good water stability and strong luminescence emissions. It not only possesses excellent luminescence sensing activities toward Fe3+ and Cr2O7 2− in aqueous solution, but can also distinguish between Cr2O7 2− and CrO4 2− by luminescence. Furthermore, it could be simply and quickly regenerated at least five times. A study of the sensing mechanism indicated that luminescence quenching may be related to the energy competition between the complex and sensing analytes.

A one-dimensional coordination polymer, namelycatena-poly[[aquapyridinecadmium(II)]-μ3-{4,4′-[(2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-phenylene)bis(methylene)]dibenzoato}], [Cd(C25H22O4)(C5H5N)(H2O)]n, has been synthesized by a biphasic solvothermal reaction. The CdIIcation is located in a CdO5N six-coordinated environment. Thetrans4,4′-[(2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3-phenylene)bis(methylene)]dibenzoate ligand connects the CdIIcations to form a one-dimensional ribbon incorporating centrosymmetric [Cd2(COO)2] secondary building units. Inter-ribbon O—H...O hydrogen bonds extend the one-dimensional ribbons into a two-dimensional sheet. No π–π interactions are observed. Comparing products synthesized using a different method, it was found that biphasic solvothermal conditions play a crucial role in obtaining large well-shaped single crystals; only intractable precipitates were obtained by the traditional single-phase solvothermal method.

The effect of pressure on the crystal structure of a coordination polymer, emim[MnII(btc)] (emim = 1-ethyl,3-methyl imidazolium cation, btc = 1,3,5-benzene-tricarboxylate), was investigated with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. At 4.3 GPa the unit-cell volume had decreased by 14% compared with ambient conditions. The unit-cell contraction is highly anisotropic, with thea- andb-axes decreasing by 5.5 and 9.5%, respectively, and thec-axis compressing a mere 0.25% up to 1.7 GPa followed by a 0.2% expansion between 1.7 and 4.3 GPa. The 0.2% increase in length of thec-axis in this interval happens above the quasi-hydrostatic limit of the pressure-transmitting medium and therefore it might be a consequence of strain gradients. Under ambient conditions, two MnO6units are connected by two carboxylate ligands to form dimeric units. On increasing pressure, a non-bonded O atom from a bridging carboxylate group approaches the Mn atom, with the Mn—O distance decreasing from 2.866 (1) Å at 0.3 GPa to 2.482 (6) Å at 4.3 GPa, increasing the coordination environment of the Mn ion from six- to seven-coordinated.

AbstractA new coordination polymer {[Co2(DPDBT)2(DCPS)2(H2O)](H2O)}n (1) [DPDBT = 2,8-di(pyridin-4-yl)dibenzothiophene, H2DCPS = 4,4′-dicarboxydiphenyl sulfone], was synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Complex 1 exhibits a 2D structure with two different kinds of binuclear cobalt cluster units. The UV/Vis spectra of 1 and of the ligands were investigated, indicating that complex 1 is a potential wide gap semiconductor material.

The first Ce(III)-based coordination polymer ICR-9 (ICR stands for Inorganic Chemistry Řež), with the formula Ce2(C8H10P2O4)3, containing ditopic phenylene-1,4-bis(methylphosphinic acid) linker, was synthetized under solvothermal conditions. The crystal structure, solved using electron diffraction tomography (EDT), revealed 2D layers of octahedrally coordinated cerium atoms attached together through O-P-O bridges. The structure is nonporous, however, the modification of synthetic conditions led to unconventional metal–organic framework (or defective amorphous phase) with a specific surface area up to approximately 400 m2 g-1.
