AbstractAlthough chirality is an ever-present characteristic in biology and some artificial molecules, controlling the chirality and demystifying the chirality origin of complex assemblies remain challenging. Herein, we report two homochiral Ag14 nanoclusters with inherent chirality originated from identical rotation of six square faces on a Ag8 cube driven by intra-cluster π···π stacking interaction between pntp− (Hpntp = p-nitrothiophenol) ligands. The spontaneous resolution of the racemic (SD/rac-Ag14a) to homochiral nanoclusters (SD/L-Ag14 and SD/R-Ag14) can be realized by re-crystallizing SD/rac-Ag14a in acetonitrile, which promotes the homochiral crystallization in solid state by forming C–H···O/N hydrogen bonds with nitro oxygen atoms in pntp− or aromatic hydrogen atoms in dpph (dpph = 1,6-bis(diphenylphosphino)hexane) on Ag14 nanocluster. This work not only provides strategic guidance for the syntheses of chiral silver nanoclusters in an all-achiral environment, but also deciphers the origin of chirality at molecular level by identifying the special effects of intra- and inter-cluster supramolecular interactions.

The compound, {6,6′-dimethoxy-2,2′-[(4-azaheptane-1,7-diyl)bis(nitrilomethanylidyne)]diphenolato}zinc(II) methanol monosolvate, [Zn(C22H27N3O4)]·CH3OH, at 298 K crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pna21. The Zn atom is coordinated by a pentadentate Schiff base ligand in a distorted trigonal–bipyramidal N3O2 geometry. The equatorial plane is formed by the two phenolic O and one amine N atom. The axial positions are occupied by two amine N atoms. The distorted bipyramidal geometry is also supported by the trigonality index (τ), which is found to be 0.85 for the molecule. In the crystal, methanol solvent molecule is connected to the complex molecule by an O—H...O hydrogen bond and the complex molecules are connected by weak supramolecular interactions, so achiral molecules generate a chiral crystal. The Hirshfeld surface analysis suggests that H...H contacts account for the largest percentage of all interactions.

In this paper, a new kind of chitosan schiff base and its zinc complexes were prepared. Chitosan schiff base (CS-DBSB) was obtained when 3, 5-Di-tert-butyl salicylaldehyde was introduced to the C-2 nitrogen position of chitosan. Its zinc complex of CS-DBSB (CS-DBSB-Zn) was also prepared. The structure and performance of physicochemical characteristics of CS-DBSB and CS-DBSB-Zn were examined by FT-IR, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric (TG). The thermal behaviors of CS-DBSB and CS-DBSB-Zn were described. TG curves presented three events including water loss, decomposition of the polysaccharide generating a carbonaceous residue that burns at higher temperatures.
