We report on the observation of an electro-optical effect for a linear rotation of the optical axis as a function of the electric field in a tilted liquid crystalline smectic phase of an achiral bent-core compound, attributed to a spontaneous helical state in its SmCSPF phase.

AbstractNovel liquid crystalline composites composed of a nematic two-frequency-addressing liquid crystal and organized clay mineral have been prepared. The particles of the clay mineral were dispersed homogeneously in the liquid crystal. The composite cells displayed a reversible and multistable electro-optical effect between transparent and turbid light scattering states by changing the frequency of the electric field. The light transmittances of both transparent and light scattering memory states did not change after 15 hrs without the electric field applied.

In a known display cell with the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) and interdigital electrodes on one of the glass substrates, the “In-Plane Switching” (IPS) mode is implemented, in which the NLC main optical axis reorients in a plane parallel to substrates, providing the most correct color reproduction at different angles view, up to 178 ° horizontally and vertically. Unfortunately, the creation of interdigital metal electrodes complicates and increases the technological process cost and causes a decrease in image contrast. At the same time, experimental results and calculations based on classical electro-optics of crystals indicate that electrooptical switching in the IPS mode is a natural and intrinsic feature of a conventional (with continuous electrodes) display cell with a planar-oriented layer of the ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC), in which the effect of the deformed (by the electric field) helix FLC nanostructure is realized (DHF effect). In such a cell, the reorientation of the main optical axis under the influence of a weak electric field also occurs in the substrate plane if the FLC has a small pitch (about 100 nm or less) and a large tilt angle of molecules in the layer (about 38 ° or more). The dependences of the FLC cell light transmittance measured in this work, confirmed the achievement of the IPS electro-optical mode in the DHF FLC cell; moreover, the light modulation frequency was 1 kHz. Thus, while maintaining all the advantages of the IPS mode known in NLC, its implementation in FLC allows additionally obtaining technological advantages and multiple increase in modulation frequency.

Side-chain liquid crystalline polysiloxanes (LCS) diluted with solvents show a large increase in viscosity and a newtonian flow under an electric field. Two types of solvent-diluted LCSs, A and B, are presented and their properties are described in this paper. Type A shows a large temperature-dependent ER effect a quick response of msec. order to an electric field and a dynamic behavior similar to that of a low molecular weight liquid crystal. Type B shows a stable ER effect throughout a wide range of temperatures up to 150°C, a two-step response of shear stress curve upon application of DC electric field and a micron-sized droplets structure which deforms with the electric field. The generation mechanisms of ER effect on the two types were discussed with the data of dynamic and morphological changes, referring those on a low molecular liquid crystal and a particle dispersion type ER fluid.

ABSTRACTIn the last years, in order to achieve active tuning of photonic crystals devices, the possibility to use liquid crystal inside photonic crystals has been explored.On this line of argument, in this paper, we numerically investigate a tunable T-shaped waveguide diplexer, based on a two-dimensional square lattice photonic crystal composed of silicon rods in a liquid crystals. We prove that complete splitting of the entire input wavelengths range in two sub-ranges symmetrical with respect to the middle (switching) wavelength, and propagating in right and left arms respectively, can be achieved. Moreover, changing the refractive index of liquid crystals by electro-optical effect, a tuning of switching wavelength of about 60 nm can be obtained.
