Microstructure and phase transformation of a furnace-cooled eutectoid Zn–Al-based alloy were studied after laser beam bombardment using low-angle x-ray diffraction (XRD) and backscattered scanning electron microscopy (BSEM). It was found that the microstructure of the laser-beam-treated specimen consisted mainly of the supersaturated Zn-rich β′s phase particulates of about 1−2 μm in diameter. Three structure morphologies were observed. Microcracking occurred in the laserbeam-affected zone during laser processing. Two laser-processing-induced phase transformations, i.e., decomposition of the η′FC phase and a four-phase transformation, were detected using XRD and BSEM techniques, similar to phase transformations that occurred in the same eutectoid Zn–Al-based alloy after various thermal and thermomechanical processing procedures.

The LuB12 ® LuB4 ® LuB2 phase transformations on annealing in vacuum (T=(1400÷1800) K, p < 10-2 Pa) are investigated with use of the parent single crystals. SEM and X-ray researches of the corresponding lutetium boride single crystals were carried out before and after their annealing. It is shown that the LuB12 → LuB4 phase transformation takes place in surface layer and transition region spreads inwards the single crystal bulk with time. According to the assessed Lu-B phase diagram the LuB4 phase transformation into other individual phases is impossible, and at first it is shown that under corresponding conditions the LuB4 → LuB2 spontaneous phase transformation takes place both on the surface and in the LuB4 single crystal bulk.

The electron state and the nature of the exchange interactions of cobalt atoms in BiNb1-xСoxO4-δ solid solutions of triclinic and orthorhombic modifications were studied using the magnetic susceptibility and NEXAFS-spectroscopy. In order to determine the electronic state of cobalt atoms, the solid solutions and oxides of cobalt CoO, Co3O4 were studied by NEXAFS-spectroscopy. The X-ray spectroscopy and the study of the magnetic susceptibility of the solid solutions revealed the presence of the monomers and exchange-related clusters of cobalt with the Co(II) and Co(III) charge states characterized mostly by the antiferromagnetic type of exchange. The cobalt containing solid solutions allowed us to confirm the reversibility of the α↔β-BiNbO4 phase transformation

Geological samples typically contain many minerals (phases) with multiple element compositions. A complete analytical description should give the number of phases present, the volume occupied by each phase in the bulk sample, the average and range of composition of each phase, and the bulk composition of the sample. A practical approach to providing such a complete description is from quantitative analysis of multi-elemental x-ray images.With the advances in recent years in the speed and storage capabilities of laboratory computers, large quantities of data can be efficiently manipulated. Commercial software and hardware presently available allow simultaneous collection of multiple x-ray images from a sample (up to 16 for the Kevex Delta system). Thus, high resolution x-ray images of the majority of the detectable elements in a sample can be collected. The use of statistical techniques, including principal component analysis (PCA), can provide insight into mineral phase composition and the distribution of minerals within a sample.

To unveil the activation of dioxygen on the copper centre (Cu<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>core) of tyrosinase, we performed X-ray crystallograpy with active-form tyrosinase at near atomic resolution. This study provided a novel insight into the catalytic mechanism of the tyrosinase, including the rearrangement of copper-oxygen species as well as the intramolecular migration of copper ion induced by substrate-binding.<br>

Molar heat capacities and molar enthalpies of fusion of the solvates Zn(NO3)2 . 2·24 DMSO, Zn(NO3)2 . 8·11 DMSO, Zn(NO3)2 . 6 DMSO, NaNO3 . 2·85 DMSO, and AgNO3 . DMF, where DMSO is dimethyl sulfoxide and DMF is dimethylformamide, have been determined over the temperature range 240 to 400 K. Endothermic peaks found for the zinc nitrate solvates below the liquidus temperature have been ascribed to solid phase transformations. The molar enthalpies of the solid phase transformations are close to 5 kJ mol-1 for all zinc nitrate solvates investigated. The dependence of the molar heat capacity on the temperature outside the phase transformation region can be described by a linear equation for both the solid and liquid phases.
