A novel approach, combining sulfurization and cation-exchange processes, is developed to fabricate hollow ZnCdS rhombic dodecahedral cages from ZIF-8, which exhibit superior catalytic activity and durability for hydrogen evolution from water splitting under cocatalyst-free and visible-light driven conditions.

Photocatalytic H2 generation by B,P-codoped Si quantum dots (QDs) with diameters in the quantum confinement regime is investigated. The H2 generation rate is enhanced by the increase of reduction ability of Si QDs owing to the quantum size effect.

Highly efficient, visible-light-induced hydrogen (H2) production via water splitting can be achieved without the help of a cocatalyst by using a noble-metal-free core–shell photocatalyst, in which zinc sulfide (ZnS) nanoparticles are anchored on cadmium sulfide nanorods (CdS NRs).

The excellent photocatalytic activity of Zn0.8Cd0.2S@g-C3N4 heterojunctions is ascribed to the synergetic effects of twinned homojunctions and core–shell structures.
