We report the preparation of porous double network hydrogels with different pore sizes. These porous gels exhibit excellent mechanical properties, fast solvent-absorption and higher solvent-absorption capacity.

Closed-cell expanded polypropylene (EPP) foam is commonly used in car bumpers for the purpose of absorbing energy impacts. Characterization of the foam’s mechanical properties at varying strain rates is essential for selecting the proper material used as a protective structure in dynamic loading application. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of loading strain rate, material density, and microstructure on compressive strength and energy absorption capacity for closed-cell polymeric foams. We performed quasi-static compressive strength tests with strain rates in the range of 0.2 to 25 mm/s, using a hydraulically controlled material testing system (MTS) for different foam densities in the range 20 g/dm3 to 220 g/dm3. The above tests were carried out as numerical simulation using ABAQUS software. The verification of the properties was carried out on the basis of experimental tests and simulations performed using the finite element method. The method of modelling the structure of the tested sample has an impact on the stress values. Experimental tests were performed for various loads and at various initial temperatures of the tested sample. We found that increasing both the strain rate of loading and foam density raised the compressive strength and energy absorption capacity. Increasing the ambient and tested sample temperature caused a decrease in compressive strength and energy absorption capacity. For the same foam density, differences in foam microstructures were causing differences in strength and energy absorption capacity when testing at the same loading strain rate. To sum up, tuning the microstructure of foams could be used to acquire desired global materials properties. Precise material description extends the possibility of using EPP foams in various applications.

A new geometric design method for foldcores based on the generalized Resch patterns that allow face-to-face bonding interfaces between the core and the skins is proposed. Based on the geometric design method, a systematic numerical investigation on the quasi-static mechanical properties of the generalized Resch-based foldcores made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) woven fabrics subjected to compression and shear loads is performed using the finite element method that is validated by experiments. The relationships between the mechanical properties and various geometric parameters as well as laminate thickness of the generalized Resch-based CFRP foldcores are revealed. Additionally, the mechanical properties of the generalized Resch-based CFRP foldcore are compared to those of the standard Resch-based, Miura-based foldcore, the honeycomb core, and the aluminum counterpart. It is found that the generalized Resch-based CFRP foldcore performs more stably than the honeycomb core under compression and has higher compressive and shear stiffnesses than the standard Resch-based and Miura-based foldcores and absorbs as nearly twice energy under compression as the Miura-based foldcore does. When compared with the aluminum counterpart, the CFRP model has higher weight-specific stiffness and strength but lower energy absorption capacity under shearing. The results presented in this paper can serve as the useful guideline for the design of the generalized Resch-based composite foldcore sandwich structures for various performance goals.

Different laid modes of aluminum alloy section bars and their mortise and tenon joints were bending tested, and their mechanical properties were compared, in order to research on the influence that forming a mortise and tenon joint brought to the original bars. Opening a hole laterally and inserting another shorter bar in the hole changed the bending properties and energy absorption capacity of the original bar. In horizontal laid mode, the mortise and tenon joint was weaker than the original bar when bearing bending load, but it was stronger in vertical laid mode. Weld beads of the mortise and tenon joints were strong enough to maintain the structure integrality before the main section bars were destroyed by load.

Porous ceramics (bricks) was obtained using red clay, milled fusible cullet, and biowaste in the temperature range 950-1000?C. The high content of water in biowaste eliminates the necessity of introducing water in soft mud forming of bricks. The porosity, water absorption capacity, and mechanical properties of the prepared ceramics depend on content of milled cullet and sintering temperature.

The growth of the manufacturing industry in Indonesia affects on the demand of automotive parts. This study aims see the mechanical properties of organic brake canvas made from durian fruit skin and teak leaves. Composite making was done by smoothing durian fruit and teak leaves to become powder. The resulting powder was filtered with mesh 60 so that the particle size is the same so as to facilitate mixing. After that, simple mixing with other ingredients such as magnesium oxide and polyester resin is carried out. The printing process was carried out with a hydraulic press with a load of 4 tons for 3 hours. The brake canvas produced were tested for hardness, wear resistance, and absorbency by varying the percentage composition of the powder of durian fruit fiber and teak leaves. There are five variations in the percentage of composite material composition tested. The results obtained the percentage of the most optimum composition that has a value of hardness, wear wear resistance, and absorption capacity close to the value of the Indonesian National Standard (SNI 09-0143).

This study deals with determination of the properties of the fine recycled aggregate (FRA) concrete with partial replacement of natural sand in concrete mixtures. The FRA was obtained from concrete waste and crushed on fraction 0 – 4 mm by laboratory jaw crusher. The geometrical and physical properties of natural sand and the FRA were tested. The main goal of this study is evaluation of the basic physical and mechanical properties of the concrete with partial natural sand replacement by the FRA such as workability, water absorption capacity, compressive strength and flexural strength. A total four concrete mixtures were prepared. The first concrete mixture was prepared only with natural sand, did not include the FRA. In other concrete mixtures, natural sand was replaced by the FRA in various replacement ratios (40 %, 50 %, and 60 %). All concrete mixtures were designated with the same parameters for clear comparison. The workability of fresh concrete mixtures and physical and mechanical properties of hardened concrete were tested.
