Abstract Extensional mixing elements (EMEs) that impose extension-dominated flow via stationary single-plane or double-plane hyperbolic converging-diverging channels were previously designed for twin-screw and single-screw extruders (TSE and SSE, respectively). In a recently published work by the authors, reactive extrusion was performed on PS/PA6 polymer blends TSE using EMEs and a crystalline phase transition of the minor phase in these droplets was observed as the size of droplet decreases from micron to submicron. Herein, we expand upon this work to SSE and study: a) The ability of the EMEs to improve dispersive mixing in the same blends; b) Assess the possibility of achieving the same crystalline phase transition in SSEs. The final blends were characterized by DSC, rheologically and morphologically via SEM, and the results show that while EME-based SSE leads to much improved mixing, better than non-EME TSE, the reduction in size of the PA6 disperse phase is not enough to induce the phase transition observed in EME-based TSE.

AbstractA systematic study of various metal-insulator transition (MIT) associated phases of VO2, including metallic R phase and insulating phases (T, M1, M2), is required to uncover the physics of MIT and trigger their promising applications. Here, through an oxide inhibitor-assisted stoichiometry engineering, we show that all the insulating phases can be selectively stabilized in single-crystalline VO2 beams at room temperature. The stoichiometry engineering strategy also provides precise spatial control of the phase configurations in as-grown VO2 beams at the submicron-scale, introducing a fresh concept of phase transition route devices. For instance, the combination of different phase transition routes at the two sides of VO2 beams gives birth to a family of single-crystalline VO2 actuators with highly improved performance and functional diversity. This work provides a substantial understanding of the stoichiometry-temperature phase diagram and a stoichiometry engineering strategy for the effective phase management of VO2.

Macroporous Ca12Al14O33(C12A7) mayenite monoliths have been successfully prepared via a sol-gel process in the presence of propylene oxide (PO) and poly (ethyleneoxide) (PEO). Gelation of CaO-Al2O3binary system with nitrates salts as additional precursors is accelerated by PO as an acid scavenger, while PEO works as a phase separation inducer to mediate the phase separation of the system. Appropriate PO and PEO amounts allow the formation of monolithic xerogel with interconnected macropores and co-continuous skeletons. The resultant dried gels are amorphous and the single crystalline phase Ca12Al14O33mayenite forms after heat-treatment at 1100 °C in air, while the macrostructure is preserved with a porosity as high as 78% and smoother and denser skeletons.
