Lipid composition in cellular membranes plays an important role in maintaining the structural integrity of cells and in regulating cellular signaling that controls functions of both membrane-anchored and cytoplasmic proteins. ATP-dependent ABC and P4-ATPase lipid transporters, two integral membrane proteins, are known to contribute to lipid translocation across the lipid bilayers on the cellular membranes. In this review, we will highlight current knowledge about the role of cholesterol and phospholipids of cellular membranes in regulating cell signaling and how lipid transporters participate this process.

Electrically conducting poly[E-1,2-(4,4prime-dihexyl-2,2prime-dithienyl)ethylene] was synthesized and structurally characterized by UV-visible, 1H NMR, and FTIR spectroscopy. The head-to-head arrangement of the alkylthiophene dyads directly affects the UV-visible, photoluminescence, and electroluminescence maxima of the polymer. The conductivity of the doped polymer was measured to be ~2 S cm-1 and the stability of the oxidized polymer possessing various dopants was compared. UV-visible irradiation of PDHDTE rendered the films insoluble and photolithography was used to produce micron-size images. FTIR was used to monitor the photoproducts during photolysis of PDHDTE. Mechanisms of photooxidation were proposed, based on the photoproducts observed.Key words: polythiophene derivative, head-to-head dyad, photolithography, photooxidation, electroluminescence.

<p>Lead halide perovskites (LHP) microcrystals are promising materials for various optoelectronic applications. Surface coating on particles is a common strategy to improve their functionality and environmental stability, but LHP is not amenable to most coating chemistries because of its intrinsic weakness against polar solvents. Here, we describe a novel method of synthesizing LHP microcrystals in a super-saturated polar solvent using sonochemistry and applying various functional coatings on individual microcrystals <i>in situ</i>. We synthesize cesium lead bromine perovskite (CsPbBr<sub>3</sub>) microparticles capped with organic poly-norepinephrine (pNE) layers. The catechol group of pNE coordinates to bromine-deficient lead atoms, forming a defect-passivating and diffusion-blocking shell. The pNE layer enhances the stability of CsPbBr<sub>3</sub> in water by 2,000-folds, enabling bright luminescence and lasing from single microcrystals in water. Furthermore, the pNE shell permits biofunctionalization with proteins, small molecules, and lipid bilayers. Luminescence from CsPbBr<sub>3</sub> microcrystals is sustained in water over 1 hour and observed in live cells. The functionalization method may enable new applications of LHP particles in water-rich environments.<b></b></p>

Abstract Lipid bilayers suspended over microwells on Si substrates are promising platforms for nanobiodevices that mimic cell membranes. Using the biotin-avidin interaction, we have succeeded in selectively arranging vesicles on the freestanding region of a lipid bilayer. When ternary lipid mixtures of saturated lipid, unsaturated lipid, and cholesterol are used, they separate into liquid-order (Lo) and liquid-crystalline (Lα) domains. A freestanding lipid bilayer prefers the Lα-phase over the Lo-phase because of the difference in their flexibility. In addition, the type of biotinylated lipid determines whether it is localized in the Lα-phase domain or the Lo-phase domain. As a result, the biotinylated unsaturated lipids localized in the Lα-phase domain aggregate in the freestanding lipid bilayer, and vesicles labeled with biotin selectively bind to the freestanding lipid bilayer by the biotin-avidin interaction. This technique helps to introduce biomolecules into the freestanding lipid bilayer of nanobiodevices via vesicles.

The aim of this study was to assess the photostability of quercetin in the presence of anionic and nonionic polymeric gels with varied compositions of an added component—glycerol. The samples were irradiated continuously at constant temperature. The stability of quercetin in solution and incorporated into the gels was evaluated by an UV-Vis spectrophotometer. FTIR spectroscopy (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy) was used to detect the changes in the structure of quercetin depending on the polymer used in the gel, and on the exposure time. Photostabilization is an important aspect of quality assurance in photosensitive compounds. The decomposition rate of quercetin in the ionic preparation of polyacrylic acid (PAA) with glycerol was 1.952·10−3 min−1, whereas the absence of glycerol resulted in a decay rate of 5.032·10−4 min−1. The formulation containing non-ionic methylcellulose resulted in a decomposition rate of quercetin in the range of 1.679·10−3 min−1. The decay rate of quercetin under light influence depended on the composition of the gel. It was found that the cross-linked PAA stabilized quercetin and the addition of glycerol accelerated the photodegradation.
