Semiconductor gas sensors using metal oxides, carbon nanotubes, graphene-based materials, and metal chalcogenides have been reviewed from the viewpoint of the sensitive, selective, and reliable detection of exhaled biomarker gases, and perspectives/strategies to realize breath analysis on a chip for disease diagnosis are discussed and suggested.

Background:: The scientific and clinical interest of breath analysis for non-invasive disease diagnosis has been focused by the scientific community over the past decade. This was due to the exhalation of prominent volatile organic compounds (VOCs) corresponding to the metabolic activities in the body and their concentration variation. To identify these biomarkers, various analytical techniques have been used in the past and the threshold concentration was established between a healthy and diseased state. Subsequently, various nanomaterials-based gas sensors were explored for their demand in quantifying these biomarkers for real-time, low cost and portable breathalyzers along with the essential sensor performances. Methods:: We focus on the classification of graphene derivatives and their composites’ gas sensing efficiency for the application in the development of breathalyzers. The review begins with the feasibility of the application of nanomaterial gas sensors for healthcare applications. Then, we systematically report the gas sensing performance of various graphene derivatives/semiconductor metal oxides (SMO) binary nanocomposites and their optimizing strategies in selective detection of biomarkers specific to diseases. Finally, we provide insights on the challenges, opportunity and future research directions for the development of breathalyzers using other graphene derivatives/SMO binary nanocomposites. Results:: On the basis of these analyses, graphene and its derivatives/metal oxides based binary nanocomposites have been a choice for gas sensing material owing to their high electrical conductivity and extraordinary thickness-dependent physicochemical properties. Moreover, the presence of oxygen vacancies in SMO does not only alter the conductivity but also accelerates the carrier transport rate and influence the adsorption behavior of target analyte on the sensing materials. Hence researchers are exploring the search of ultrathin graphene and metal oxide counterpart for high sensing performances. Conclusion:: Their impressive properties compared to their bulk counterpart have been uncovered towards sensitive and selective detection of biomarkers for its use in portable breathalyzers.

H2s Detection

H2S gas is a toxic and hazardous byproduct of the oil and gas industries. It paralyzes the olfactory nerves, with concentrations above 100 ppm, resulting in loss of smell; prolonged inhalation may even cause death. One of the most important semiconducting metal oxides for the detection of H2S is CuxO (x = 1, 2), which is converted to CuxS upon exposure to H2S, leading to a remarkable modulation in the resistance and appearance of an electrical sensing signal. In this review, various morphologies of CuxO in the pristine form, composites of CuxO with other materials, and decoration/doping of noble metals on CuxO nanostructures for the reliable detection of H2S gas are thoroughly discussed. With an emphasis to the detection mechanism of CuxO-based gas sensors, this review presents findings that are of considerable value as a reference.

Gas sensors have been object of increasing attention by the scientific community in recent years. For the development of the sensing element, two major trends seem to have appeared. On one hand, the possibility of creating complex structures at the nanoscale level has given rise to ever more sensitive sensors based on metal oxides and metal–polymer combinations. On the other hand, gas biosensors have started to be developed, thanks to their intrinsic ability to be selective for the target analyte. In this review, we analyze the recent progress in both areas and underline their strength, current problems, and future perspectives.

The results of studies of many types of semiconductor H2 O2 sensors are discussed in this review of 185 articles about hydrogen peroxide. The properties of electrochemical detectors, sensors based on organic and inorganic materials, graphene, and nano-sensors are analyzed. Optical and fluorescent sensors, detectors made of porous materials, quantum dots, fibers, and spheres are briefly discussed. The results of our studies in the YSU of hydrogen peroxide sensors made from solid solutions of carbon nanotubes with semiconducting metal oxides are also presented in the review. The fundamentals of the manufacture of biomarkers of respiration containing hydrogen peroxide vapors, which make it possible to judge the degree of a person's illness with various respiratory diseases (asthma, lung cancer, etc.), are discussed.

This paper presents an overview of semiconductor materials used in gas sensors, their technology, design, and application. Semiconductor materials include metal oxides, conducting polymers, carbon nanotubes, and 2D materials. Metal oxides are most often the first choice due to their ease of fabrication, low cost, high sensitivity, and stability. Some of their disadvantages are low selectivity and high operating temperature. Conducting polymers have the advantage of a low operating temperature and can detect many organic vapors. They are flexible but affected by humidity. Carbon nanotubes are chemically and mechanically stable and are sensitive towards NO and NH3, but need dopants or modifications to sense other gases. Graphene, transition metal chalcogenides, boron nitride, transition metal carbides/nitrides, metal organic frameworks, and metal oxide nanosheets as 2D materials represent gas-sensing materials of the future, especially in medical devices, such as breath sensing. This overview covers the most used semiconducting materials in gas sensing, their synthesis methods and morphology, especially oxide nanostructures, heterostructures, and 2D materials, as well as sensor technology and design, application in advance electronic circuits and systems, and research challenges from the perspective of emerging technologies.

Excellent physical properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are used for manufacturing of many electronic devices. Single wall version of CNTs is promising for detection many important gases including gases exhaled by the organism. The most promising is the realization of gas sensors based on metal oxides doped with CNTs. Application of CNT-based sensors to breathe analysis, properties of the SWCNTs gas sensors with metal nanoparticles and metal oxides and CNTs biosensors are reviewed in this paper.

In the present work, a gas sensor device S3 based on an array of eight metal oxides semiconductor gas sensors has been demonstrated and applied to the discrimination of quality and geographical origins of the Italian extra virgin olive oils. Furthermore, the principal component analysis (PCA) and artificial neural networks (ANN) were carried out on the set of data acquired from the sensor array response to the extra virgin olive oil headspace. The preliminary results have shown a good capability of the instrument to distinguish different kind of extra virgin olive oil samples and thus evaluate their quality and origin.
