Abstract Coaxial fiber-shaped supercapacitors are a promising class of energy storage devices requiring high performance for flexible and miniature electronic devices. Yet, they are still struggling from inferior energy density, which comes from the limited choices in materials and structure used. Here, Zn-doped CuO nanowires were designed as 3D framework for aligned distributing high mass loading of MnO2 nanosheets. Zn could be introduced into the CuO crystal lattice to tune the covalency character and thus improve charge transport. The Zn–CuO@MnO2 as positive electrode obtained superior performance without sacrificing its areal and gravimetric capacitances with the increasing of mass loading of MnO2 due to 3D Zn–CuO framework enabling efficient electron transport. A novel category of free-standing asymmetric coaxial fiber-shaped supercapacitor based on Zn0.11CuO@MnO2 core electrode possesses superior specific capacitance and enhanced cell potential window. This asymmetric coaxial structure provides superior performance including higher capacity and better stability under deformation because of sufficient contact between the electrodes and electrolyte. Based on these advantages, the as-prepared asymmetric coaxial fiber-shaped supercapacitor exhibits a high specific capacitance of 296.6 mF cm−2 and energy density of 133.47 μWh cm−2. In addition, its capacitance retention reaches 76.57% after bending 10,000 times, which demonstrates as-prepared device’s excellent flexibility and long-term cycling stability.

An easy and environmentally friendly method was developed for the preparation of a stabilized carbon nanotube–crystalline nanocellulose (CNT–CNC) dispersion and for its deposition to generate self-standing CNT–CNC composite films. The composite films were carbonized at different temperatures of 70 °C, 800 °C, and 1300 °C. Structural and morphological characteristics of the CNT–CNC films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which revealed that the sample annealed at 800 °C (CNT–CNC800) formed nano-tree networks of CNTs with a high surface area (1180 m2·g−1) and generated a conductive CNC matrix due to the effective carbonization. The carbonized composite films were applied as anodes for lithium-ion batteries, and the battery performance was evaluated in terms of initial voltage profile, cyclic voltammetry, capacity, cycling stability, and current rate efficiency. Among them, the CNT–CNC800 anode exhibited impressive electrochemical performance by showing a reversible capacity of 443 mAh·g−1 at a current density of 232 mA·g−1 after 120 cycles with the capacity retention of 89% and high rate capability.

In this study, a very simple and highly effective mechanochemical preparation method was developed for the preparation of Ni nanoparticles supported graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites (Ni/GO, where Ni is a composition of Ni(OH)2, NiOOH, NiO, Ni2O3 and NiO2), 3 wt% NiO/GO (Ni/GO-1) and 8 wt% NiO/GO(Ni/GO-2). The developed method is not only very simple and efficient, but also, the morphology of Ni/GO nanocomposites can be tuned by simply varying the metal loading. Morphology and specific surface area of the resultant Ni/GO nanocomposites were investigated by mean of AFM, HR-TEM and BET. Chemical sate and factual content of Ni in Ni/GO-1 and Ni/GO-2, and the presence of defective sites in Ni-nanocomposites were investigated in detail. To our delight, the prepared Ni/GO-2 demonstrated superior catalytic activity toward the reduction of 2- and 4-nitrophenol in water with high rate constant (kapp) of 35.4 × 10−3 s−1. To the best of our knowledge, this is the best efficient Ni-based graphene nanocomposites for the reduction of 2- and 4-NP reported to date. The Ni/GO-1 and Ni/GO-2 demonstrated an excellent reusability; no loss in its catalytic activity was noticed, even after 10th cycle. Surprisingly the Ni/GO-2 as electrode material exhibited an excellent specific capacitance of 461 F/g in 6 M KOH at a scan rate of 5 mV. Moreover, the Ni/GO nanocomposites were found to possess poor electrical resistance and high stability (no significant change in the specific capacitance even after 1000 cycles).
