The continuous production of Pt-based heterogeneous catalysts based on ultra-small (<2 nm) noble metal nanoparticles deposited on mesoporous ordered silica and their catalytic activity in VOC abatement are here reported. Commercially available micromixers can be easily interfaced to create a multistage platform which allows the growth of metal noble NPs as well as their alloys.

We firstly discover the enhanced catalytic activity of magnetic noble metal nanoparticles mediated by surface plasmon resonance. Under light irradiation with certain wavelength, the catalytic performance of magnetic noble metal nanoparticles shows changes with different degrees and directions that are associated with the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of the noble metal. Moreover, the coupling of silver and gold allows the catalytic performance of magnetic bimetallic Ag–Au nanoparticles to show more positive response to surface plasmon resonance. The magnetic bimetallic Ag–Au nanoparticles show excellent catalytic performance toward the reduction reaction of aromatic nitro group, and corresponding rate constant of the catalytic reduction reaction increases about three times with light irradiation.

Highly dispersed and tiny-sized noble metal nanoparticles are deposited on a hairy poly(4-vinylpyridine)-silica support, which can serve as recyclable heterogeneous catalysts in the reductive degradation of 4-NP and RhB dye pollutants.

Hybridisation of mesoporous organosilicas (MO) to reinforce the surface capability in adsorption and stabilisation of noble metal nanoparticles is of great attention in generating/supporting noble metal within their matrices and transforming them into efficient heterogeneous catalysts. Here, we used a unique hybrid of organic-inorganic mesoporous silica in which pore profile pattern was similar to the well-known mesoporous silica, SBA-15 for catalysis. This hybrid mesoporous organosilica was further engaged as a support in the synthesis and stabilisation of Pd nanoparticles on its surface, and then, the obtained Pd-supported MO was employed as a heterogeneous green catalyst in the conversion of aqueous p-nitrophenol (PNP) to p-aminophenol (PAP) at room temperature with efficient recyclability.
