Two lantern-shaped, high-nuclearity 3d–4f clusters were synthesized by using iminodiacetic acid (IDA) and isonicotinic acid (HIN) as the co-ligand under solvothermal conditions. Magnetic studies show a large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) for the gadolinium analogue.

A family LnIII4 clusters were successfully synthesized and structurally characterized. Magnetic studies show that Gd4 cluster displays magnetic refrigeration, while Dy4 cluster demonstrates two distinct slow magnetic relaxation processes.

3d-Gd phosphonate clusters are attractive for their potential applications as magnetic coolers. A new pentanuclear cluster [Mn(II)2Gd(III)3(OH)(dtbmfPO3)2(tBuCO2)8(HO2CtBu)(H2O)2]·HO2CtBu·CH3CN (1) (dtbmfPO3H2 = (2,7-di-tert-butyl-9-methyl-9H-fluoren-9-yl)phosphonic acid) has been synthesised and characterised. The cluster has a planar structure in which the trinuclear {MnGd2(OH)} and dinuclear {MnGdO2} units are joined together by two phosphonate groups. The magnetic studies reveal that 1 shows antiferromagnetic interactions and a large magnetocaloric effect (ΔS = 20.9 J kg–1 K–1 at ΔH = 7 T).

Four new [2 × 2] square grid LnIII4 clusters were successfully synthesized by employing a multidentate chelating Schiff base ligand. Magnetic studies showed that cluster 1 displays a larger magnetocaloric effect (−ΔSm = 34.46 J kg−1 K−1 for ΔH = 7.0 T at 2.0 K), while 3 exhibits slow relaxation behavior under a zero dc field, with ΔE/kB of 42.76 K and τ0 of 1.02 × 10−6 s.

Reaction of (aminomethyl)phosphonic acid (ampH2) with a mixture of gadolinium and cobalt pivalates under solvothermal conditions, led to a pseudo-icosahedral cage {Gd12}, which shows a large magnetocaloric effect (MCE).

Four rare structurally novel octanuclear quad(double-strands) cluster helicates containing Ln8 polyhedron cores have been synthesized. Magnetic studies show that the Gd derivative exhibits the magnetocaloric effect and the Dy derivative shows slow magnetic relaxation under zero dc field.
