Kamlet Taft solvatochromic parameters, namely the hydrogen-bond acidity, hydrogen-bond basicity and dipolarity/polarizability and ETN parameters of a wide range of DESs composed of cholinium chloride, dl-menthol and a quaternary ammonium salt ([N4444]Cl), and corresponding ILs are here presented.

The title compound, C13H18IN4 +·Br−·2H2O, is a quaternary ammonium salt derived from 2-iodobenzyl bromide and hexamethylenetetramine. Two water molecules per asymmetric unit act as hydrogen-bond donors to the bromide anion. Direct cation–anion contacts are established via C—H donors, mainly from methylene groups in the α position to the ammonium centre.

The title compound, C23H28NO4 +·Cl−·HCl, is a quaternary ammonium salt with a scaffold similar to that of acetyl-L-carnitine hydrochloride. The two Cl atoms in the structure are tightly bonded by a strong Cl—H...Cl hydrogen bond with a Cl...Cl separation of 3.068 (2) Å. The cations are held together partly by a range of C—H...O and C—H...π interactions.

The paper deals with instability of solutions of quaternary ammonium permanganates, QMnO4 (Q = tetraethyl-, tetra-1-propyl-, tetra-1-butyl-, tetra-1-pentyl-, tetra-1-octyl-, and cetyltrimethylammonium), in dichloromethane and presents the rate constants and activation parameters of the reduction of permanganate. Attention was paid to the properties of colloidal Mn(IV) intermediate. The stability of the solutions depends markedly on the quaternary ammonium salt used.
