Transition metal and nitrogen co-doped carbon-based catalysts (TM-N-C) have become the most promising catalysts for Pt/C due to their wide range of sources, low cost, high catalytic activity, excellent stability and strong resistance to poisoning, especially Fe–N–C metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are some of the most promising precursors for the preparation of Fe–N–C catalysts due to their inherent properties, such as their highly ordered three-dimensional framework structure, controlled porosity, and tuneable chemistry. Based on these, in this paper, different iron sources were added to synthesis a sort of zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIF-8). Then the imidazole salt in ZIF-8 was rearranged into high N-doped carbon by high-temperature pyrolysis to prepare the Fe–N–C catalyst. We studied the physical characteristics of the catalysts by different iron sources and their effects on the catalytic properties of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). From the point of morphology, various iron sources have a positive influence on maintaining the morphology of ZIF-8 polyhedron. Fe–N/C–Fe(NO3)3 has the same anion as zinc nitrate, and can maintain a polyhedral morphology after high-temperature calcination. It had the highest ORR catalytic activity compared to the other four catalyst materials, which proved that there is a certain relationship between morphology and performance. This paper will provide a useful reference and new models for the development of high-performance ORR catalysts without precious metals.

Redox kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) conversion and poor electrical conductivity of sulfur during the charge-discharge process greatly inhibit the commercialization of high-performance lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Herein, we synthesized CoSe2 porous hollow flowers (CoSe2-PHF) by etching and further selenizing layered double hydroxide, which combined the high catalytic activity of transition metal compound and high electrical conductivity of selenium. The obtained CoSe2-PHF can efficiently accelerate the catalytic conversion of LiPSs, expedite the electron transport, and improve utilization of active sulfur during the charge-discharge process. As a result, with CoSe2-PHF/S-based cathodes, the Li–S batteries exhibited a reversible specific capacity of 955.8 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C and 766.0 mAh g−1 at 0.5 C, along with a relatively small capacity decay rate of 0.070% per cycle within 400 cycles at 1 C. Even at the high rate of 3 C, the specific capacity of 542.9 mAh g−1can be maintained. This work enriches the way to prepare porous composites with high catalytic activity and electrical conductivity as sulfur hosts for high-rate, long-cycle rechargeable Li–S batteries.

AbstractHerein, we report a methodology that leads to the formation of Ru metallic sites, followed by the development and anchorage of Pt-Ru alloyed nanoparticles on the surface of Ordered Mesoporous Hollow Carbon Spheres (OMHCS). Along with the Ru sites, it is demonstrated that the functionalization promotes the formation of functional groups on the surface of the OMHCS. In a first stage, OMHCS are functionalized with the [(η6-C6H5OCH2CH2OH)RuCl2]2 (Ru-dim) and [(η6-C6H4CH(CH3)2CH3)RuCl2]2 (Ru-cym) organometallic compounds. Afterwards, Pt nanoparticles are dispersed by the microwave-assisted polyol method over the functionalized supports obtaining the low-metal content 5 wt. % Pt/OMHCSRu-dim and Pt/OMHCSRu-cym nanocatalysts. The degree of Ru alloyed is found to be around 35%. The low-Pt content Pt/OMHCSRu-cym and Pt/OMHCSRu-dim exhibit a higher catalytic activity for the Oxygen (OER) and the Hydrogen (HER) Evolution Reactions than the Pt/C benchmark and the Pt/OMHCS nanocatalysts. The overpotential for the OER at 10 mA cm-2 (ηOER) is 300 mV and 210 mV smaller at Pt/OMHCSRu-cym and Pt/OMHCSRu-dim compared to Pt/C, respectively. The corresponding values of the HER at -10 mA cm-2 (ηHER) are 14 and 18 mV smaller, respectively. The high catalytic activity of Pt/OMHCSRu-cym and Pt/OMHCSRu-dim has been attributed in part to the presence of Ru0 and RuO2 species from organometallic functionalization, and the modification of the d-valence band of Pt. Their high performance for the OER and the HER opens new lines of research for the design of nanocatalysts for alkaline electrochemical water splitting.

A 3D Co–CN framework was synthesized with the Co–CN electrode showing exceptionally high catalytic activity and good durability. Only requiring overpotentials of 181 mV and 266 mV to afford current densities of 10 mA cm−2 in acid and alkaline electrolytes, respectively.
