A donor–acceptor–donor triad with excellent intramolecular energy transfer (99%) exhibits cascade energy transfer in the presence of second acceptors leading to tunable emission colours. Chiral acceptor doping enables chiral induction and to locate acceptors in the donor scaffold.

Valence force constants for N-benzylideneaniline and for two p,p′-disubstituted derivatives were estimated by means of a point-charge model using CNDO data. A vibrational assignment of bands which are sensitive to the electron donor-acceptor characteristic of substituents is proposed. The conformational changes are interpreted in terms of an intramolecular energy transfer between substituents.

Abstract In mixed systems of donor and acceptor molecules having closely located S1 levels a reversible nonradiative energy transfer should occur. It influences remarkably the dependence of the donor quantum yield ηD on the acceptor concentration in the range of high acceptor concentrations of systems with high donor-to-acceptor reduced concentration ratios.
