A set of centrally halogenated oligothiophenes were developed for organic solar cells. The devices with a chlorinated donor (2Cl7T) achieved power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of up to ca. 11.5% (vs. ca. 2.5% for non-halogenated donor DRCN7T).

Recent efforts in research and development of small molecule based organic solar cells have led to power conversion efficiencies exceeding 10%. Understanding the incorporated interfaces in these devices is an utterly important parameter for their improvement. Here we investigate the influence ofα-sexithiophene (α-6T) nanostructures on the performance parameters ofα-6T/C60inverted bilayer solar cells. Byin situcontrolled growth, crystallineα-6T nanostructures are formed in the devices and a correlation between the morphology of the structures and the device performance is presented. Under certain, well-defined circumstances, we observe an efficiency increase of around 100% when implementing crystalline nanostructures.

Two oligothiophenes were synthesized and used as electron donors in organic solar cells. The devices with a fluorinated donor (2FDC5T) achieved power conversion efficiencies of up to ca. 9.02% (vs. ca. 7.03% for the non-halogenated donor DC5T).

The synthesis of two N,N-bis(4-biphenylyl)aniline (BPA) based push–pull is reported herein. Evaluation as donor materials in all-small-molecule planar-heterojunction organic solar cells lead to impressive fill factor (>73%) and promising power conversion efficiencies.
