In the title compound, [Fe(C12H12N2)(H2O)4]SO4, the central FeIIion is coordinated by two N atoms from the 5,5′-dimethyl-2,2′-bipyridine ligand and four water O atoms in a distorted octahedral geometry. The Fe—O coordination bond lengths vary from 2.080 (3) to 2.110 (3) Å, while the two Fe—N coordination bonds have practically identical lengths [2.175 (3) and 2.177 (3) Å]. The chelating N—Fe—N angle of 75.6 (1)° shows the largest deviation from an ideal octahedral geometry; the other coordination angles deviate from ideal values by 0.1 (1) to 9.1 (1)°. O—H...O hydrogen bonding between the four aqua ligands of the cationic complex and four O-atom acceptors of the anion leads to the formation of layers parallel to theabplane. Neighbouring layers further interact by means of C—H...O and π–π interactions involving the laterally positioned bipyridine rings. The perpendicular distance between π–π interacting rings is 3.365 (2) Å, with a centroid–centroid distance of 3.702 (3) Å.

This paper presents the preparation of phase-change polymer colloidal photonic crystals (PCs) by assembling hollow latex spheres encapsulated with dodecanol for the first time. The monodispersed hollow latex spheres were obtained by phase reversion of monodispersed core-shell latex spheres in the n-hexane, which dissolves the PS core and retains the PMMA/PAA shell. The as-prepared phase-change colloidal PCs show stable phase-change behavior. This fabrication of phase-change colloidal PCs would be significant for PC’s applications in functional coatings and various optic devices.

AirfugeR (Beckman) direct ultracentrifugation of viral samples on electron microscopy grids offers a rapid way to concentrate viral particles or subunits and facilitate their detection and study. Using the A-100 fixed angle rotor (30°) with a K factor of 19 at maximum speed (95 000 rpm), samples up to 240 μl can be prepared for electron microscopy observation in a few minutes: observation time is decreased and structural details are highlighted. Using latex spheres to calculate the increase in sensitivity compared to the inverted drop procedure, we obtained a 10 to 40 fold increase in sensitivity depending on the size of particles. This technique also permits quantification of viral particles in samples if an aliquot is mixed with latex spheres of known concentration.Direct ultracentrifugation for electron microscopy can be performed on laboratory samples such as gradient or column fractions, infected cell supernatant, or on clinical samples such as urine, tears, cephalo-rachidian liquid, etc..
