In this paper, fluorescent copper nanoclusters (NCs) are used as a novel probe for the sensitive detection of gossypol for the first time. Based on a fluorescence quenching mechanism induced by interactions between bovine serum albumin (BSA) and gossypol, fluorescent BSA-Cu NCs were seen to exhibit a high sensitivity to gossypol in the range of 0.1–100 µM. The detection limit for gossypol is 25 nM at a signal-to-noise ratio of three, which is approximately 35 times lower than the acceptable limit (0.9 µM) defined by the US Food and Drug Administration for cottonseed products. Moreover, the proposed method for gossypol displays excellent selectivity over many common interfering species. We also demonstrate the application of the present method to the measurement of several real samples with satisfactory recoveries, and the results agree well with those obtained using the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The method based on Cu NCs offers the followings advantages: simplicity of design, facile preparation of nanomaterials, and low experimental cost.

Here we study an equilibrium model describing the regulation of transcriptional activity through the heterodimerization of transcription factors. We demonstrate that this model involves a new type of biochemical control which accounts for a very high sensitivity.

AbstractFor achieving well-performing optical thermometry, a new type of dual-mode optical thermometer is explored based on the valley-to-peak ratio (VPR) and fluorescence lifetime of Eu3+ emissions in the ZrO2:Eu3+ nanocrystals with sizes down to 10 nm. In the VPR strategy, the intensity ratio between the valley (600 nm) generated by the emission band overlap and the 606 nm peak (5D0→7F2), which is highly temperature sensitive, is employed, giving the maximum relative sensing sensitivity (Sr) of 1.8% K−1 at 293 K and good anti-interference performance. Meanwhile, the 606 nm emission exhibits a temperature-dependent decay lifetime with the highest Sr of 0.33% K−1 at 573 K, which is due to the promoted nonradiative relaxation with temperature. These results provide useful information for constructing high-performance dual-mode optical thermometers, which may further stimulate the development of photosensitive nanomaterials for frontier applications.

The ability to detect fluoride anions with high selectivity and sensitivity by using the naked eye is crucial yet challenging. In this study, a novel, simple conjugated organic dye, N-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-3,6-diiodocarbazole (CA-TBMDS) was developed and used for the first time as a colorimetric sensor for fluoride. CA-TBMDS was found to be a highly sensitive fluoride chemosensor, with a detection limit as low as 3 × 10−5 M. The reaction of CA-TBMDS with fluoride anions in a tetrahydrofuran solution resulted in a color change from colorless to yellow under ambient light, which can be discriminated by the naked eye. The sensor operated via intermolecular proton transfer between the amide units and the fluoride anion, as confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance titration. CA-TBMDS is not only highly sensitive to fluoride anions, but also exhibits high sensitivity in the presence of various ions. This work demonstrates that N-butyldimethylchlorosilane-based organic dyes have prospective utility as a type of fluoride anion chemosensor.

Abstract Excellent luminescent materials are essential for high-performance fluorescent nanosensors. Here, a new-type self-calibrated humidity sensor has been established through monitoring the fluorescent color change of carbon dots (CDs) confined in sodium hydroxide (CDs@NaOH). The CDs are prepared by a facile and rapid microwave assisted heating method using citric acid, urea, and NaOH as precursors. The confinement effect from NaOH has reduced the nonradiative transition and suppressed the aggregation-induced quenching of the CDs in solid. Compared with other sensors based on CD fluorescent visualization, the sensor has good linearity and wide humidity detection range from 6.9% to 95.4%. With the increased relative humidity, the fluorescence color of the sensor change from green to blue. The proposed sensing mechanism is due to the breaking and reforming of hydrogen bonds and proton transfer occurring at the CD-NaOH matrix interfaces. This finding suggests a potential role for the spatial confinement effect and may provide an avenue for developing highly sensitive humidity readouts.

A new type of conjugated polybenzimidazole (CPBI) was synthesized through a simple polycondensation reaction without metal catalysis, and N-alkylation modification was carried out to solve the problems of solubility and fluorescence properties. A series of nano-microsphere polymers CPBIn with large conjugation, good solubility, and strong fluorescence has been successfully used as “turn-off” fluorescent probes for the first time. The results show that, under suitable N-alkylation conditions, the obtained CPBIn can be used as a highly sensitive and selective fluorescent probe for the detection of Cu2+ and Zn2+ at the same time, and their detection limits are both nM levels. In addition, CPBI2 can be designed as an ultra-sensitive IMPLICATION logic gate at the molecular level, cyclically detecting Cu2+. With the test paper containing CPBI2, easy and quick on-site detection can be achieved. This research provides a new idea for the brief synthesis of multifunctional materials.

AbstractThere are many figures of merit, which determine suitability of luminescent thermometers for practical applications. These include thermal sensitivity, thermal accuracy as well as ease and cost effectivness of technical implementation. A novel contactless emission thermometer is proposed, which takes advantage of the coexistence of photoluminescence from Nd3+ doping ions and black body emission in transparent Nd3+ doped-oxyfluorotellurite glass host matrix. The opposite temperature dependent emission from these two phenomena, enables to achieve exceptionally high relative sensitivity SR = 8.2%/°C at 220 °C. This enables to develop new type of emissive noncontact temperature sensors.

AbstractOzone is widely used in daily life, but studies have shown that O3 can damage human trachea and lungs, leading to diseases such as asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop a simple and efficient detection method for monitoring O3 in living cells. In this study, 3-(but-3-en-1-yl)-2-(7-(but-3-en-1-yloxy)-2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)benzo[d]thiazol-3-ium (BCT) as a new type of water-soluble fluorescent probe was synthesized by substitution reaction of 4-bromo-1-butene and hydroxycoumarin-benzothiazole derivatives, which can specifically detect ozone in aqueous solution. The interaction of ozone on the probe can be completed within 20 min, the fluorescence intensity is significantly enhanced, and it has the advantages of high sensitivity (detection limit LOD = 43 nM). The influence of pH on the fluorescent performance of BCT shows that the probe with super stability under weak alkali and acidic environment, which provides the necessary conditions for its detection of ozone in physiological system detection. Therefore, BCT is expected to become an effective tool for detecting ozone in cellular organisms.

This article presents a miniaturized fiber inline Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI), with an open micro-notch cavity fabricated by one-step femtosecond (fs) laser micromachining, for highly sensitive refractive index measurement. The device was tested for measurement of the refractive indices of various liquids including isopropanol, acetone and methanol at room temperature, as well as the temperature-dependent refractive index of deionized water from 3 to 90°C. The sensitivity for measurement of refractive index change of water was 1163 nm/RIU at the wavelength of 1550 nm. The temperature cross-sensitivity of the device was about 1.1×10−6 RIU/°C. The small size, all-fiber structure, small temperature dependence, linear response and high sensitivity, make the device attractive for chemical and biological sensing.
