We show for the first time that liquid–solid lithium electrolytes can exhibit both a very high lithium transference number (up to 0.89) and high overall ionic conductivity (up to 0.48 mS cm−1) when the solid contains a large number of mesopores covered by a high density of –OH groups enabling anionic adsorption.

<p>The sodium-ion conducting family of Na3<i>Pn</i>S4, with <i>Pn</i> = P, Sb, have gained interest for the use in solid-state batteries due to their high ionic conductivity. However, significant improvements to the conductivity have been hampered by the lack of aliovalent dopants that can introduce vacancies into the structure. Inspired by the need for vacancy introduction into Na3<i>Pn</i>S4, the solid solutions with WS42- introduction are explored. The influence of the substitution with WS42- for PS43- and SbS43-, respectively, is monitored using a combination of X-ray diffraction, Raman and impedance spectroscopy. With increasing vacancy concentration improvements resulting in a very high ionic conductivity of 13 ± 3 mS·cm-1 for Na2.9P0.9W0.1S4 and 41 ± 8 mS·cm-1 for Na2.9Sb0.9W0.1S4 can be observed. This work acts as a stepping-stone towards further engineering of ionic conductors using vacancy-injection via aliovalent substituents.</p>

ABSTRACT Perturbation theory is an indispensable tool for studying the cosmic large-scale structure, and establishing its limits is therefore of utmost importance. One crucial limitation of perturbation theory is shell-crossing, which is the instance when cold-dark-matter trajectories intersect for the first time. We investigate Lagrangian perturbation theory (LPT) at very high orders in the vicinity of the first shell-crossing for random initial data in a realistic three-dimensional Universe. For this, we have numerically implemented the all-order recursion relations for the matter trajectories, from which the convergence of the LPT series at shell-crossing is established. Convergence studies performed at large orders reveal the nature of the convergence-limiting singularities. These singularities are not the well-known density singularities at shell-crossing but occur at later times when LPT already ceased to provide physically meaningful results.

We have developed a sib selection procedure for cloning Neurospora crassa nuclear genes by complementation of mutants. This procedure takes advantage of a modified N. crassa transformation procedure that gives as many as 10,000 to 50,000 stable transformants per microgram of DNA with recombinant plasmids containing the N. crassa qa-2+ gene. Here, we describe the use of the sib selection procedure to clone genes corresponding to auxotrophic mutants, nic-1 and inl. The identities of the putative clones were confirmed by mapping their chromosomal locations in standard genetic crosses and using restriction site polymorphisms as genetic markers. Because we can obtain very high N. crassa transformation frequencies, cloning can be accomplished with as few as five subdivisions of an N. crassa genomic library. The sib selection procedure should, for the first time, permit the cloning of any gene corresponding to an N. crassa mutant for which an appropriate selection can be devised. Analogous procedures may be applicable to other filamentous fungi before the development of operational shuttle vectors.

AbstractWe utilized the new high-order (250-378 mode) Magellan Adaptive Optics system (MagAO) to obtain very high-resolution science in the visible with MagAO's VisAO CCD camera. In the good-median seeing conditions of Magellan (0.5–0.7″) we find MagAO delivers individual short exposure images as good as 19 mas optical resolution. Due to telescope vibrations, long exposure (60s) r' (0.63μm) images are slightly coarser at FWHM = 23-29 mas (Strehl ~ 28%) with bright (R < 9 mag) guide stars. These are the highest resolution filled-aperture images published to date. Images of the young (~ 1 Myr) Orion Trapezium θ1 Ori A, B, and C cluster members were obtained with VisAO. In particular, the 32 mas binary θ1 Ori C1C2 was easily resolved in non-interferometric images for the first time. Relative positions of the bright trapezium binary stars were measured with ~ 0.6–5 mas accuracy. In the second commissioning run we were able to correct 378 modes and achieved good contrasts (Strehl>20% on young transition disks at Hα). We discuss the contrasts achieved at Hα and the possibility of detecting low mass (~ 1–5 Mjup) planets (past 5AU) with our new SAPPHIRES survey with MagAO at Hα.

ABSTRACTOxides in the Sr-Fe-Co-O system exhibit both electronic and ionic conductivities. Recently, the Sr-Fe-Co-O system attracted great attention because of its potential to be used for oxygen-permeable membranes that can operate without electrodes or external electrical circuitry. Electronic and ionic conductivities of two compositions of the Sr-Fe-Co-O system, named SFC-1 and SFC-2, have been measured at various temperatures. The electronic transference number is much greater than the ionic transference number in SFC-1, whereas the electronic and ionic transference numbers are very similar in SFC-2. At 800°C, the electronic and ionic conductivities are ≈76 and ≈4 S•cm−1, respectively, for SFC-1; whereas, for SFC-2, the electronic and ionic conductivities are ≈10 and ∼1 S•cm−1, respectively. By performing a local fitting to the equation σ • T = Aexp(-Ea / kT), we found that the oxide ion activation energies are 0.92 and 0.37 eV, respectively, for SFC-1 and SFC-2. The oxygen diffusion coefficient of SFC-2 is ≈ 9 x 10−7cm2/sec at 900°C.

The gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) composed of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) with lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate (LiCF3SO3) salt dissolved in a binary mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC) and propylene carbonate (PC) organic solvents have been prepared by the solution casting technique. The samples are prepared by varying the salt concentrations from 5 wt.% to 30 wt.%. Impedance spectroscopy measurement has been carried out to determine the ionic conductivity of the samples. The sample containing 25 wt.% of LiCF3SO3salt exhibits the highest room temperature ionic conductivity of 2.56 x 10-3S cm-1. The conductivity of the GPEs has been found to depend on the salt concentration added to the sample, while at higher salt concentration reveals a decrease in the ionic conductivity due to ions association. The temperature dependence of conductivity from 303 K to 373 K is found to obey the Arrhenius law. The ionic transference number, tiof GPEs has been estimated by the DC polarization method and the value is found to be 0.98, 0.93, and 0.97 for the sample containing 25 wt.%, 5 wt.% and 30 wt.% respectively. This result is consistent with the conductivity studies.
