A hybrid photocatalytic system consisting of a Ru(ii) binuclear complex and Ag-loaded TaON can reduce CO2 to HCOOH by visible light irradiation even in aqueous solution (TONHCOOH = 750, ΦHCOOH = 0.48%).

A direct Z-scheme heterojunction of Co1-C3N4@α-Fe2O3 was constructed for efficient photocatalytic CO2 reduction coupled with water oxidation under visible-light irradiation, with a CO generation rate of 14.9 μmol g−1 h−1 and CO selectivity over 99%.

In this study, the degradation of Acid Orange 7 (AO7) in aqueous solutions by iron(III) under activation by persulfate (PS, S2O82-) oxidation and Visible (Vis) light (≥420 nm) exposure was performed. The efficiency of different systems including Fe3+/Vis, Fe3+/PS, PS/Vis and Fe3+/PS/Vis has been evaluated. It was found that the efficiency of Fe3+/PS and PS/Vis system was low, and only about 48% of AO7 was oxidized within 20 min of experiment time under Fe3+/Vis system action, and it was further improved to almost 95% within 20 min by Fe3+/PS/Vis system. Various process-dependent parameters, such as PS, Fe3+, dye concentration as well as initial pH were investigated to optimize the process. As results indicated, the dye's degradation efficiency increased with the increase of PS and Fe3+ concentration over the tested range. The pH had an insignificant effect on the degradation of AO7. CuGaS2, (AgInS2)x–(ZnS)2−2x, Ag2ZnGeS4, Ni- or Pb-doped ZnS, (ZnS)0.9–(CuCl)0.1, and ZnGa0.5In1.5S4 showed activities for CO2 reduction to form CO and/or HCOOH in an aqueous solution containing K2SO3 and Na2S as electron donors under visible light irradiation. Among them, CuGaS2 and Ni-doped ZnS photocatalysts showed relatively high activities for CO and HCOOH formation, respectively. CuGaS2 was applied in a powdered Z-scheme system combining with reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-incorporated TiO2 as an O2-evolving photocatalyst. The powdered Z-scheme system produced CO from CO2 in addition to H2 and O2 due to water splitting. Oxygen evolution with an almost stoichiometric amount indicates that water was consumed as an electron donor in the Z-schematic CO2 reduction. Thus, we successfully demonstrated CO2 reduction of artificial photosynthesis using a simple Z-scheme system in which two kinds of photocatalyst powders (CuGaS2 and an RGO–TiO2 composite) were only dispersed in water under 1 atm of CO2.
