Superhydrophobic and oleophobic surfaces have attracted increasing attention because of their self-cleaning properties. A composite coating composed of anodized titanium and sol-gel (TiAO/SG) was developed and has good superhydrophobic and oleophobic property. The anodized titanium coating was prepared on the titanium substrate and then a sol-gel layer was coated on the surface of the anodized titanium layer to obtain a composite coating with superhydrophobic and oleophobic properties. The adhesion weight of glycerol on the surface of the superhydrophobic titanium wire decreased to 4.8% of that of untreated titanium wire, which showed that the material had good oleophobic property. This new composite coating could achieve self-healing superhydrophobicity by releasing loaded perfluorodenytriethoxysilane to the surface of the coating. Given its superhydrophobicity, self-healing and wear resistance, the TiAO/SG coating was expected to achieve healable self-cleaning protection in titanium devices.

This paper introduces the innovation of adding inorganic nano additive into the organic anti-rust coating and the development of “organic-inorganic nano-composite coating”, which can be used to realize the effective coverage of reinforcement surface by utilizing “self repair” function and “super extension” behavior of nano materials to remedy the defect for severe corrosion of general organic coating caused by the uneven painting.

When one cut himself, it's amazing to watch how quickly the body acts to mend the wound. Immediately, the body works to pull the skin around the cut back together. The concept of repair by bleeding of enclosed functional agents serves as the biomimetric inspiration of synthetic self repair systems. Such synthetic self repair systems are based on advancement in polymeric materials; the process of human thrombosis is the inspiration for the application of self healing fibres within the composite materials. Preliminary results based on flexural 3 point bend test on prepared samples have shown the healed hollow fibre laminate has a healed strength increase of 47.6% compared to the damaged baseline laminate. These results gave us confidence that there is a great potential to adopt such self healing mechanism on actual composite parts like in aircraft’s composite structures.

By designing the different formulations of the composites and adopting optimized technology including extrusion and molding, the effects of the Micro-capsules on the properties of nylon composites are analyzed by the impact property test. The mechanical impact property of the glass fiber reinforced nylon composites is influenced little if the content of the self-healing microcapsules added is less than 3.5%, and the technology of self-healing microcapsules used in the polymer composite gear is feasible.
