Nanocrystalline Ni12P5 was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. It showed high catalytic activity (10 760 μmol h−1 g−1, TOF = 9.3 h−1) and good stability (15 h) for the hydrogen evolution from water under visible light irradiation.

We report the temperature-controlled synthesis of two nickel phosphide polymorphs, Ni2P and Ni5P4, by phosphorization of Ni foil or foams using phosphine gas, and their excellent catalytic activity toward hydrogen evolution reaction.

The phase-controlled synthesis and formation mechanism of Ni nanocrystals with hcp and fcc phases are investigated and discussed, while hcp Ni shows comparable catalytic activity with the best noble metal catalysts for reduction of 4-nitrophenol.

Novel activated Mg–Fe/Ti LDHs with high crystallinity, used for transesterification between dimethyl carbonate and aliphatic diols as acid–base bifunctional catalysts, were successfully synthesized by co-precipitation.
