The catalytic efficiency of 1,1′-butylenebis(3-sulfo-3H-imidazol-1-ium) chloride as a sulfonic acid-functionalized ionic liquid was demonstrated for the synthesis of pyrrolidinone derivatives under mild conditions. The electronic effect of substituents on aniline derivatives was investigated. Further, a study on the structure–activity relationship of ionic liquids containing sulfonic groups for the synthesis of ethyl-2-(4-chlorophenyl)-4-hydroxy-5-oxo-1-(p-tolyl)-2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrole-3-carboxylate was performed under optimal conditions. The results showed that the catalytic properties of ionic liquids containing two sulfonic or imidazole moieties with carbon spacers was superior to ionic liquids having one sulfonic or imidazole moiety with no carbon spacer.

A convenient and efficient chiral CuFe2O4@SiO2-Mn(III) Ch.salen nanocatalyst has been developed for the C-N cross-coupling reactions of aryl halides/ phenylboronic acid with N-heterocyclic compounds in water and/or DMSO under mild conditions. The catalyst could be applied for the N-arylation of a variety of nitrogen-containing heterocycles with aryl chlorides, bromides, iodides and phenylboronic acid under mild conditions. Moderate to good yields were achieved for all substrates. The structure of catalyst was characterized using various techniques including FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDX, XRD, TEM and TGA. The catalyst can be simply recovered and reused for several times without significant loss of activity.

Ionic Liquid assisted efficient synthesis of some 2-aminobenzenethiols has been reported using three different Ionic Liquids (ILs) namely methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [MIM]+[BF4]−, methylimidazolium chloride [MIM]+[Cl]− and methylimidazolium nitrate [MIM]+[NO3]−. A comparative study has been carried out for the synthesis of target molecules in the presence and absence of IL, leading to conclusion that maximum yield has been observed with [MIM]+[BF4]−.

A variety of substituted 2-methylpyrroles (3-8) were oxidized using the metalloporphyrin catalysts iron(III) meso-tetra(2,6-dichloro-3-sulphonatophenyl)-β-octachloroporphyrin chloride 1 and iron(III) meso-tetra(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-β-octachloroporphyrin chloride 2 under very mild conditions. Treatment of the resulting allylic alcohols 3a-8a with α-free pyrroles 9 and 10 resulted in a very efficient synthesis of the corresponding dipyrromethanes 3b-8b and 3c-8c. Furthermore, the above allylic alcohols when treated with furfurylamine produced the novel (2-furylmethyl)-2-pyrrolylmethylamines 3d-8d.Key words: catalytic oxidation, metalloporphyrins, pyrroles, dipyrromethanes, polyhalogenated porphyrins.
