Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) wastewater treatment process has lots of characteristics, such as randomness, time-varying characteristics, complexity and so on. In order to solve the above problems, a predictive PID control method based on DMC and ordinary PID for SBR wastewater treatment process dissolved oxygen (DO) control was proposed. The simulation studies were conducted with the MATLAB in a sewage treatment plant. The results showed that the proposed predictive PID control method was robust and jamproof. Meanwhile, the wastewater treatment system also had a strong capacity of shock load.

The influence of a high density of rotifers, which is known to be able to control filamentous bacteria, on the parameters of an activated sludge process was examined in four professional laboratory batch reactors. These reactors allow the imitation of the work of a wastewater treatment plant with enhanced nutrient removal. The parameters, including oxygen concentration, pH and temperature, were constantly controlled. The experiment showed that Lecane rotifers are able to proliferate in cyclically anaerobic/anoxic and aerobic conditions and at dissolved oxygen concentrations as low as 1 mg/L. In 1 week, rotifer density increased fivefold, exceeding the value of 2,200 ind./mL. The grazing activity led to an improvement in settling properties. Extremely high numbers of rotifers did not affect the main parameters, chemical oxygen demand (COD), N-NH4, N-NO3, P-PO4 and pH, during sewage treatment. Therefore, the use of rotifers as a tool to limit the growth of filamentous bacteria appears to be safe for the entire wastewater treatment process.

Abstract In this paper, the measurement of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in a wastewater treatment process is analyzed and an intelligent integrated prediction method based on case-based reasoning (CBR) is proposed in order to overcome difficulties. Due to the fact that there are many factors that influence the accuracy of the prediction model, the radial basis function, which is a neural network with a 3 layer feedforward network, is employed to reduce the dimension of input values. Under these circumstances, a back propagation neural network combining with a nearest neighbor retrieval strategy is adopted to match case. Then, the measurement of BOD in wastewater treatment process is analyzed. Finally, the validity of the improved CBR in sewage treatment is demonstrated by using numerical results.

The process of wastewater treatment is one of the sources of greenhouse gas emissions from urban human activities and methane is a source of greenhouse gases can not be ignored. According to the method recommended by IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories 2006,a calculation model was established to assess methane emissions of wastewater treatment in Henan. Then methane emissions from wastewater treatment in Henan province in the year of 2010 were estimated. The results showed that net methane emissions from the sewage treatment process was 21,764.1 tons, and methane from the industrial wastewater generated process was 98,609.33 tons. The results will provide a scientific basis for policy maker to mitigate the methane emission from the sewage treatment process of Henan province.

The Aerobic Upflow Sludge Blanket (AUSB) Process is a new biological wastewater treatment process applying the concept of the self-immobilization to aerobic activated sludge. This report discussed the experimental results for municipal sewage treatment using the pilot AUSB apparatus. The sludge produced in the AUSB process formed granules (diameter: 2 - 8 mm), showing excellent settleability. Under the condition of 1.57 kg/m3 day of BOD volumetric loading in winter, the following quality was obtained for the treated water : 20 mg/ℓ of BOD and 9.6 mg/ℓ of SS. The MLSS in the AUSB reactor was maintained at 8200 mg/ℓ.

Numerous investigations in different European countries observed various pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in notable concentrations in the aquatic environment. Further determinations found the effluents of sewage treatment plants (STPs) to be significant sources for the entry of pharmaceutical residuals to rivers, streams and surface waters. Due to those pathways the knowledge about the elimination of these substances and their behaviour in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) is elementary for protection of an intact aquatic environment. Since the sludge retention time (SRT) is the most important parameter for the design of STPs, its influence on the reduction rate of these PhACs in the wastewater treatment process was investigated. To study this influence of the SRT on the elimination of PhACs, lab scale plants have been operated with different sludge retention times. The results of the laboratory experiments have been validated analysing various STPs within a wide capacity range and operating at different SRTs. This report describes the determinations observed on the antiepileptic drug Carbamazepine, the two antiphlogistics and analgesics Diclofenac and Ibuprofen and the lipid regulator Bezafibrate.

To alleviate the water pollution, the original wastewater treatment process was transformed based on the existing structures. Anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic process (A2/O process) was used as the main process, instead of the original two-stage aeration process (AB process). Pretreatment process and advanced treatment process were strengthened. After transformation, the effluent quality could meet the first class of A standard of the "municipal wastewater treatment plant emission standards" (GB18918-2002) and all the quality indexes of the treated water met the requirements of discharge standard of sewage treatment. The original structures were fully used in this transformation, saving investment, which provided a practical reference for the transformation of the wastewater treatment plants.
