Background: Metallic–dielectric plasmonic nanoparticles have recently aroused great interest in view of many and novel technological applications, based on the interaction between light and matter under intense field conditions, in nonlinear integrated photonics and opto-fluidics, thanks to the possibility of tuning their electronic and optical properties through a fine control of the synthesis parameters and their nanoparticles under a high-power laser, like the one used during z-scan measures. Objective: The goal of this work is the study of nonlinear optical properties (as nonlinear refraction, scattering, two-photon absorption, optical limiting) of colloids synthesized in different liquid media by Pulsed laser ablation in liquids (PLAL), which is a photo-assisted synthesis technique ensuring the formation of stable, contaminant-free colloids directly during the ablation process. Methods: Noble metal nanoparticles, metal oxides hybrid nanostructures and silicon-based nanomaterials, were prepared by nanosecond and picosecond PLAL technique, in different media. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties have been studied by the use of a single beam z-scan technique with Q-switched frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser (λ=532 nm) at 5 ns pulse. Results: 1) A good stability of the PLAL nanocolloids under a high laser power; 2) the limiting threshold reduction inducted by the Ag-Au nanoparticles, the increase of the NLO absorption coefficient β, the reduction of the transmittance/scattering signal and the presence of a pronounced asymmetry of the peak/valley profile of the metal decorated metal oxide nanomaterials compared to the separately produced components. Conclusion: An intriguing coupling between the nature of the optical limiting response and the nanostructures rearrangement upon intense field conditions, explaining z-scan data by a classical approach able to account for the nanoparticles asymmetry and plasmonic effects, are the main results found.

We report on [Formula: see text]-scan investigations of the nonlinear optical properties of thin pyrolytic carbon films and two- and three-layer graphene films, utilizing an 800[Formula: see text]nm pulsed laser generating ultrashort 180[Formula: see text]fs pulses. We analyze the sign and magnitude of nonlinear refraction and absorption in these materials, given contradictory results in this respect in the literature. In particular, we find that nonlinear refraction of graphene changes sign with changing light intensity with concomitant subtle changes in nonlinear absorption, a behavior not reported previously that suggests an interplay of several mechanisms that depend on intensity. Pyrolytic carbon films, on the contrary, exhibit positive refraction, whose magnitude (nonlinear refractive index [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]cm2/W) is comparable to that of graphene, and strong negative absorption, i.e., bleaching, contrary to previously reported results. We discuss implications and possible mechanisms of the observed phenomena.

Nonlinear optical properties of gold aqueous colloid obtained with chemical reaction method are investigated using Z-scan technique with 38 ps pulses. Experimental results indicate that the colloid exhibits large nonlinear refraction and nonlinear absorption under the excitation of ps 532 nm pulses, while it presents large two photon absorption under ps 1064 nm pulses excitation. Meanwhile, the fluorescence emission spectrum of gold aqueous colloid is recorded under the excitation of 350 nm, and two fluorescence peaks are observed at 454 nm and 704 nm. Moreover, the average fluorescence lifetime of colloid is estimated to be 1.33 ns.

A novel dmit 2- complex: [ C 7 H 7( C 2 H 5)3 N ][ Ni ( dmit )2], abbreviated as BTEANDT, was synthesized and its third-order nonlinear optical properties were investigated by Z-scan technique at the wavelength of 1064 nm with laser duration of 20 ps. A self-focusing effect and a saturable absorption were observed. The nonlinear refraction coefficient n2 and the nonlinear absorption coefficient β have been found to be 7.311 × 10-18 m 2/W and -6.064 cm/GW when I0=3.025 GW/cm2. The intensity dependence curve of β was also studied and the result reveals that β is proportional to I0. We explained the result with the theory of absorption cross-section.

The strong nonlinear optical behavior of low-dimensional materials, such as quantum dots and core-shell quantum dots, has been a topic of intense research in recent years. As quantum dots have tunable emission via changes in their sizes, they are potentially useful in photo-electronics, photovoltaic nonlinear optics, light-emitting diode fabrication, and laser protections. Variation among core and shell shape and size, along with the chemical composition of quantum dots, define their enhanced nonlinear optical properties. Some specific nonlinear optical properties, such as nonlinear refraction, optical limiting, saturable absorption, reverse saturable absorption of CdTe and CdSe quantum dots (QDs), as well as core-shell QDs and their applications, were assessed in this paper.

3-hydroxyflavone (3-HF) is an organic molecule with excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) effect. The nonlinear optical properties of 3-HF in the three different polar solvents (cyclohexane, ethanol and their mixture) were investigated by Z-scan technique under the excitation of the 1064 nm picoseconds laser pulse. The 3-HFs in these solvents exhibit the self-defocusing effect and their nonlinear refraction indices are in the order of [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text]. The large nonlinear refraction indices may allow them to be widely used for the optoelectronic devices.
