A phenol biosensor based on the skillful immobilization of tyrosinase on zinc oxide ( ZnO ) nanorods was proposed. The ZnO nanorods fabricated by a simple vapor-phase transport method possess a high aspect ratio, good electron communication, chemical purity, smooth and positive charged surface and are ready for immobilization of biochemicals with low isoelectric point (IEP). Electrochemical measurement and Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) analysis showed that the enzyme of tyrosinase with IEP 4.5 can be adsorbed on the surface of ZnO nanorods and kept its bioactivity of the oxidation of phenol to a large extent. This led us to develop phenol biosensor with good stability and reproducibility. The proposed method creates a new way to develop biosensors using nanostructured materials with high IEP.

High density zinc oxide nanorods with uniform size were synthesized on (100) silicon substrate by vapor-phase transport method. The scanning electron microscopy images reveal that the nanorods have an average diameter of about 400 nm. The X-ray diffraction pattern demonstrates the wurtzite crystalline structure of the ZnO nanorods growing along [0001] direction. The single-photon excited photoluminescence presents a strong ultraviolet emission band at 394 nm and a weak visible emission band at 600 nm. When the ZnO nanorods were respectively pumped by various wavelength lasers from 520 nm to 700 nm, two-photon excited ultraviolet photoluminescence was observed. The dependence of the two-photon excited photoluminescence intensity on the excitation wavelength and power was investigated in detail.

Poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) (EVOH) films containing zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO Nrods) at 0.1, 0.5, and 1 wt%, were realized by solvent casting. The effect of ZnO Nrods content on morphological, thermal, optical, mechanical, and oxygen permeability properties were analyzed. In addition, moisture content and accelerated-aging test studies were performed, with the intention to determine the influence of zinc oxide nanofillers on the functional characteristics of realized packaging systems. Tensile properties showed increased values for strength and deformation-at-break in EVOH-based formulations reinforced with 0.1 and 0.5 wt% of zinc oxide nanorods. Results from the colorimetric and transparency investigations underlined that the presence of ZnO Nrods in EVOH copolymer did not induce evident alterations. In addition, after the accelerated-aging test, the colorimetric test confirmed the possibility for these materials to be used in the packaging sector. This behavior was induced by the presence of zinc oxide nanofillers that act as a UV block that made them useful as an efficient absorber of UV radiation.

This paper focus on zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods prepared using sol-gel immersion method immersed at different time. Immersion times have been varied 1~24 hr and the characteristics of each sample have been observed. The effects of immersion time on ZnO nanorods thin films have been studied in surface morphology and structural properties using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD), respectively.

We investigated the effect of immersion time on optical, electrical properties and surface morphology of nanostructured Aluminium (Al) doped Zinc Oxide (ZnO) thin films prepared by immersion technique. UV-Vis-NIR spectra indicate that the transmittance of the samples decrease with immersion time. Electrical properties study reveals the nanostructured Al doped ZnO thin film at 1 hr shows the lowest resistivity compared to other samples. Surface morphology results as characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) show that the Al doped ZnO nanorods quantity increased with immersion time.

The angiogenesis process is an essential issue in tissue engineering. Zinc oxide nanorods are biocompatible metals capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) that respond to induced angiogenesis through various mechanisms; however, released Zn (II) ions suppress the angiogenesis process. In this study, we fabricated green ZnO nanorods using albumin eggshell as a bio-template and investigate its angiogenic potential through chorioallantoic membrane assay and excision wound healing assay. This study demonstrated that angiogenesis and wound healing processes depend on pro-angiogenic factors as VEGF expression due to ZnO nanorods' exiting. Angiogenesis induced via zinc oxide nanorods may develop sophisticated materials to apply in the wound healing field.

On the basis of a direct current magnetron, a technology has been developed for producing nanoscale-oriented nanorods from zinc oxide on an acrylic polymer. The technology makes it possible to achieve different filling of the surface with zinc oxide nanorods. The nanorods is partially fused into the polymer; the cross section of the nanorods is rather close to an elongated ellipse. It is shown that, with intense abrasion, no delamination of the nanorods from the acrylic polymer is observed. The zinc oxide nanorods abrades together with the acrylic polymer. Zinc oxide nanorods luminesces with the wavelength most preferable for the process of photosynthesis in higher plants. It was shown that plants grown under the obtained material grow faster and gain biomass faster than the control group. In addition, it was found that on surfaces containing zinc oxide nanorods, a more intense formation of such reactive oxygen species as hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radical is observed. Intensive formation of long-lived, active forms of the protein is observed on the zinc oxide coating. The formation of 8-oxoguanine in DNA in vitro on a zinc oxide coating was shown using ELISA method. It was found that the multiplication of microorganisms on the developed material is significantly hampered. At the same time, eukaryotic cells of animals grow and develop without hindrance. Thus, the material we have obtained can be used in photonics (photoconversion material for greenhouses, housings for LEDs), and it is also an affordable and non-toxic nanomaterial for creating antibacterial coatings.

AbstractWe present results of cathodoluminescence (CL) investigations of high-quality zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods obtained by an extremely fast hydrothermal method on a silicon substrate. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) system equipped with CL allows direct comparison of SEM images and CL maps, taken from exactly the same areas of samples. Investigations are performed at a temperature of 5 K. An interlink between sample microstructure and emission properties is investigated. CL confirms a very high quality of ZnO nanorods produced by our method. In addition, the presence of super radiation effects in ZnO nanorod arrays is suggested.

In this paper, zinc oxide nanorods were prepared on many different substrates in the aqueous solution without adding alkali solution at 60°C. A layer of ZnO particles as the seeds for the growth were not needed to be coated on the substrates beforehand. A higher uniform and denser packed array of hexagonal ZnO nanorods forms on the glass substrate than that on the other substrates in our experiments. This technique is applicable for the preparation and patterning of functional ZnO films at low temperature. The growth mechanisms of the as-synthesized ZnO nanorods were also proposed.

Controlled growth of ZnO nanorods on various substrates is of great interest in photonic and electronic device applications. Also of interest is increasing the optical activity of zinc oxide nanorods in the visible spectrum. In this study, we report pH dependence for the morphology and photoluminescence of aligned ZnO nanorods grown on an indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrate deposited by a wet chemical bath deposition method. The ZnO nanorods were grown by a chemical bath deposition technique using equimolar ratios of zinc (II) nitrate and hexamethylenetetramine in solution at 95 °C. The pH of the reaction solution prior to oven heating was varied from pH 5 to 10.6. Surface properties of the ZnO nanorods on ITO substrates were studied using scanning electron microscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. We also compared the use of NaOH to adjust the pH with the use of NH4OH, the latter necessary at higher pH due to the relative insolubility of zinc. It was found that the size of the nanorods can vary twofold with pH and the choice of base. Uniformity of coverage is also significantly dependent upon these variables and will be discussed as it relates to solubility and crystal growth. It was also found that the intensity of the photoluminescence in the visible range is pH dependent. For example, the intensity of luminescence at 550 nm for ZnO nanorods grown at pH 7 using NH4OH is 532% of the corresponding emission for a sample prepared at pH 5.
