In this study, nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) and a TiO2 nanocomposite were synthesized using a simple hydrothermal route. Ammonia water was used as a nitrogen source to prepare the N-GQDs. When optically characterized by UV-vis, N-GQDs reveal stronger absorption peaks in the range of ultraviolet (UV) light than graphene quantum dots (GQDs). In comparison with GQDs/TiO2 and pure TiO2, the N-GQDs/TiO2 have significantly improved photocatalytic performance. In particular, it was found that, when the added amount of ammonia water was 50 mL, the content of pyridinic N and graphitic N were as high as 22.47% and 31.44%, respectively. Most important, the photocatalytic activity of N-GQDs/TiO2-50 was about 95% after 12 min. The results illustrated that pyridinic N and graphitic N play a significant role in photocatalytic performance.

We report the fabrication of polyvinylidene fluoride (tetrabutyl titanate)/polyvinyl pyrrolidone ((tetrabutyl titanate))-graphene quantum dots [PVDF(TBT)/PVP(TBT)-GQDs] film photocatalyst with enhanced photocatalytic performance. The polyvinylidene fluoride (tetrabutyl titanate)/polyvinyl pyrrolidone ((tetrabutyl titanate)) [PVDF(TBT)/PVP(TBT)] film was first prepared with a dual-electrospinning method and then followed by attaching graphene quantum dots (GQDs) to the surface of the composite film through a hydrothermal method. Later, part of the PVP in the composite film was dissolved by a hydrothermal method. As a result, a PVDF(TBT)/PVP(TBT)-GQDs film photocatalyst with a larger specific surface area was achieved. The photocatalytic degradation behavior of the PVDF(TBT)/PVP(TBT)-GQDs film photocatalyst was examined by using Rhodamine B as the target contaminant. The PVDF(TBT)/PVP(TBT)-GQDs photocatalyst showed a higher photocatalytic efficiency than PVDF(TBT)-H2O, PVDF(TBT)/PVP(TBT)-H2O, and PVDF(TBT)-GQDs, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency can be attributed to the broader optical response range of the PVDF(TBT)/PVP(TBT)-GQDs photocatalyst, which makes it useful as an effective photocatalyst under white light irradiation.

Nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs) were successfully prepared via a hydrothermal method using citric acid and urea as the carbon and nitrogen precursors, respectively. Due to different post-treatment processes, the obtained NGQDs with different surface modifications exhibited blue light emission, while their visible-light absorption was obviously different. To further understand the roles of nitrogen dopants and N-containing surface groups of NGQDs in the photocatalytic performance, their corresponding composites with TiO2 were utilized to degrade RhB solutions under visible-light irradiation. A series of characterization and photocatalytic performance tests were carried out, which demonstrated that NGQDs play a significant role in enhancing visible-light driven photocatalytic activity and the carrier separation process. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the NGQDs/TiO2 composites can possibly be attributed to an enhanced visible light absorption ability, and an improved separation and transfer rate of photogenerated carriers.

A Ag–graphene quantum dots (GQDs)–ZnO ternary photocatalyst was prepared using GQDs as both a reducing agent and a cation solvent. Photodegradation performance was improved because of the synergic effect of Ag and GQDs.
