AbstractThis study demonstrates a simple two-step post-treatment method for improving the thermoelectric power factor of low-cost poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) films. The dry re-dispersible PEDOT:PSS pellets are cost-effective, however, they exhibit extremely low thermoelectric performance. On treating with ethylene glycol followed by hydrazine, the power factor of the PEDOT:PSS films increased from 0.0632±0.0097 μW m−1K−2 to 13.3±1.5 μW m−1K−2. The enhancement might be attributed to the effective removal of the free, non-complexed PSS chains and fine control of the oxidation level of PEDOT by the two-step post-treatment.

The thermoelectric properties of Sr0.61Ba0.39Nb2O6 ceramics, reduced in various conditions, were investigated in the temperature range from 323K to 1073K. Both the electrical resistivity and the absolute Seebeck coefficient decreased with the deepening degree of oxygen-reduction. However, the decrease of the electrical resistivity had a major influence on the thermoelectric power factor. Therefore, the more heavily reduced sample can gain the higher value of thermoelectric power factor. It has been observed that the thermal conductivity increased with the deepening degree of oxygen-reduction, which indicates that the scattering of the oxygen vacancies produced by reduction does not play a dominant role in the thermal conduction. In spite of the increase of the thermal conductivity, the oxygen-reduction still promoted the thermoelectric figure of merit via the increase of the thermoelectric power factor. And the most heavily reduced Sr0.61Ba0.39Nb2O6 ceramic has the highest thermoelectric figure of merit (~0.18 at 1073 K) among all the samples.

ABSTRACTThermoelectric phenomena strongly influence the behavior of chalcogenide materials in nanoelectronic devices including phase-change memory cells. This paper presents the annealing temperature and phase dependent thermoelectric properties of Ge2Sb2Te5 films including the thermoelectric power factor and the figure of merit. The Ge2Sb2Te5 films annealed at different temperatures contain varying fractions of the amorphous and crystalline phases which strongly influence the thermoelectric properties. The thermoelectric power factor increases fom 3.2 μW/mK2 to 65 μW/mK2as the crystal phase changes from face-centered cubic to hexagonal close-packed. The data are consistent with modeling based on effective medium theory and suggest that careful consideration of phase purity is needed to improve the figures of merit for phase change memories and potentially for thermoelectric energy conversion applications.
