The NICS(1) magnetic aromaticity index is split into NICS(1) and NICS(−1) indices when the points 1 Å above and below the ring center are inequivalent by symmetry. The two indices characterize the aromaticity of the two ring faces rather than the ring itself.

We performed a retrospective study of 26 patients with acoustic tumors and 26 patients with otologically diagnosed cochlear pathology to determine the sensitivity (hit rate), specificity (false-alarm rate), and efficiency of six auditory brainstem response indices. In addition, a utility value was determined for each of these six indices. The I–V interwave interval, the interaural latency difference, and the absolute latency of wave V provided the highest hit rates, the best A’ values and good utility. The V/I amplitude ratio index provided high specificity but low sensitivity scores. In regard to sensitivity and specificity, using the combination of two indices provided little overall improvement over the best one-index measures.

In a preceding study, the molecular hydrophobicity (RM0) was determined experimentally from reverse-phase thin-layer chromatography data for several substituted phenols and 2-(aryloxy-a-acetyl)-phenoxathiin derivatives, obtained from the corresponding phenoxides and 2-(a-bromoacetyl)-phenoxathiin. QSPR correlations for RM0 were explored using four calculated molecular descriptors: the water solubility parameter (log Sw), log P, the Gibbs energy of formation (DGf), and the aromaticity index (HOMA). Triparametric correlations do not improve substantially the biparametric correlation of RM0 in terms of log Sw and HOMA.

Abstract I explore the association between the severity of lockdown policies in the first half of 2020 and mortality rates. Using two indices from the Blavatnik Centre’s COVID-19 policy measures and comparing weekly mortality rates from 24 European countries in the first halves of 2017–2020, addressing policy endogeneity in two different ways, and taking timing into account, I find no clear association between lockdown policies and mortality development.

AbstractDiversity indices are commonly used to measure changes in marine benthic communities. However, the reliability (and therefore suitability) of these indices for detecting environmental change is often unclear because of small sample size and the inappropriate choice of communities for analysis. This study explored uncertainties in taxonomic density and two indices of community structure in our target region, Japan, and in two local areas within this region, and explored potential solutions. Our analysis of the Japanese regional dataset showed a decrease in family density and a dominance of a few species as sediment conditions become degraded. Local case studies showed that species density is affected by sediment degradation at sites where multiple communities coexist. However, two indices of community structure could become insensitive because of masking by community variability, and small sample size sometimes caused misleading or inaccurate estimates of these indices. We conclude that species density is a sensitive indicator of change in marine benthic communities, and emphasise that indices of community structure should only be used when the community structure of the target community is distinguishable from other coexisting communities and there is sufficient sample size.

In this paper, a new three degrees of freedom (DOF) differentially actuated cable parallel robot is proposed. This mechanism is driven by a prismatic actuator and three cable differentials. Through this design, the idea of using differentials in the structure of a spatial cable robot is investigated. Considering their particular properties, the kinematic analysis of the robot is presented. Then, two indices are defined to evaluate the workspaces of the robot. Using these indices, the robot is subsequently optimized. Finally, the performance of the optimized differentially driven robot is compared with fully actuated mechanisms. The results show that through a proper design methodology, the robot can have a larger workspace and better performance using differentials than the fully driven cable robots using the same number of actuators.

The focus of this paper is the characteristics of bioclimatological conditions of one popular touristic region in Czech Republic. Biometeorological conditions of the region were described from the point of view of energy exchange between human body and atmospheric environment. Influences of meteorological agents on human organisms are presented by using two indices based on MENEX model. Indices illustrate the physiological strain and subjective thermal feeling of a person exposed to thermal environment. Obtained values of indices were compared to synoptical weather types. Comparisons were provided for the most uncomfortable conditions. Groups of synoptical weather types that occur when biometeorological conditions are very uncomfortable were found.

A sparse literature concerning the effects of stress on judgment and decision making has produced two tentative conclusions: (1) stress impairs judgment and (2) such impairment is often the result of the narrowing of a judge's focus of attention. While evidence supportive of these propositions exists, there have also been contradictory findings. This investigation attempted to address both of these issues. 98 undergraduate students completed a complex multiple-cue judgment task and were also assessed as to (a) their exposure to two potential sources of stress (life events and irrational thinking) and (b) the amount of personal dysphoria they were experiencing. Two indices of subjective distress, depression and state anxiety, were significantly related to poor judgmental performance. None of several indices of potential stressors confirmed a relationship, which suggests that possible external sources of stress do not negatively affect judgment unless they generate subjective distress at the time judgments are made. There was no support for the “narrowing” hypothesis.

Two Indices

Syntax is a crucial component of oral language development. Frequently, learning disabled children's oral language development is characterized by syntax problems. Hence, since deviations in oral language development may form the basis for identification of learning disabilities, adequate indices of oral language development are needed. The purpose of this study was to explore two indices of syntactic development in oral language, the T-unit and the Syntactic Density Score. Learning disabled students and a matched group of normally achieving peers were compared on these indices at four age levels. Results are reported for each measure along with a discussion and implications.
