CO is a toxic gas discharged as a byproduct in tail gases from different industrial flue gases, which needs to be taken care of urgently. In this study, a CuCl/AC adsorbent was made by a facile route of physically mixing CuCl2 and Cu(HCOO)2 powder with activated carbon (AC), followed by heating at 533 K under vacuum. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), N2 adsorption/desorption, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was shown that Cu(II) can be completely reduced to Cu(I), and the monolayer dispersion threshold of CuCl on AC support is 4 mmol·g−1 AC. The adsorption isotherms of CO, CO2, CH4, and N2 on CuCl/AC adsorbents were measured by the volumetric method, and the CO/CO2, CO/CH4, and CO/N2 selectivities of the adsorbents were predicted using ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST). The obtained adsorbent displayed a high CO adsorption capacity, high CO/N2, CO/CH4, and CO/CO2 selectivities, excellent ad/desorption cycle performance, rapid adsorption rate, and appropriate isosteric heat of adsorption, which made it a promising adsorbent for CO separation and purification.

An atomic implantation method was used to modify diatomite with CuCl. The CuCl/diatomite samples were characterized by different techniques, including FTIR, XRD, BET, SEM-TEM, EDX, and CO-TPR. Characterization results revealed the formation of CuCl particles of 50–60 nm highly dispersed on diatomite surface. CO adsorption measurements showed that 2CuCl/diatomite exhibits the highest CO adsorption capacity among all CuCl-modified samples with diatomite. Its CO adsorption capacity of 2.96 mmol/g at 30°C is 10 times higher than that of unmodified diatomite (0.29 mmol/g). The CO adsorption on CuCl-modified diatomites was found to fit well with the Langmuir–Freundlich model.

Regeneration process and adsorbent performance were investigated by a fixed-bed adsorber at 300 °C. Surface species, zeolite structure, and Pt morphology were characterized by FT-IR, XRPD and EXAFS, respectively. Performance test results indicated that ethanol adsorption capacity of Pt/NaY-SiO2 is about 2.5 times that of NaY-SiO2. After regeneration, adsorption-capacity loss is 2.5 and 43%, respectively, for Pt/NaY-SiO2 regenerated at superficial velocity of 13.2 (PtR(HF)) and 5.3 cm/min (PtR(LF)); in contrast, it is 8 and 21%, respectively, for NaYR(HF) and NaYR(LF). The appearance of absorption bands in the CH stretching region (υCH) of the IR spectra characterizing the regenerated NaY-SiO2 suggested that the adsorption-capacity loss for NaY-SiO2 was mainly caused by the deposition of carbonaceous species formed in regeneration, which cannot be burned off readily at 300 °C. In contrast, no υCH bands have been observed for the IR spectra of PtR(HF) and PtR(LF), indicating that Pt helps to burn off carbonaceous species. However, Pt agglomeration was observed in TEM and EXAFS for Pt/NaY-SiO2(LF). The appearance of a υCO band at about 2085 cm−1 of the IR spectra characterizing PtR(LF) suggested that Pt agglomeration was induced by CO adsorption. The growth of Pt particles decreases the ethanol adsorbed on Pt together with the conversion of ethanol to ethoxides and aldehyde, leading to a decrease of adsorption capacity.

AbstractAn exceptional phenomenon has been observed that SO2 and NOx in flue gas can be effectively adsorbed over activated carbon with a surprising capacity at cold temperatures with the presence of oxygen. In this study, the adsorption characteristics of NO and SO2 over activated carbon at 80, 20, 0, and − 20 is experimentally investigated. Without the presence of oxygen, adsorption of NO is negligible. In the presence of oxygen, NO can be oxidized to NO2 over activated carbon which leads to the co-adsorption of NO/NO2 within the adsorption bed. Catalytic oxidation of NO over activated carbon can be significantly enhanced at cold temperatures, leading to an extraordinary increase of adsorption capacity of NO. With an initial concentration of NO = 200 ppmv and a space velocity of 5000 h−1, the average specific capacity increases from 3.8 to 169.1 mg/g when the temperature decreases from 80 to – 20 ℃. For NO–O2 co-adsorption, the specific capacity increases along the adsorption bed due to the increasing NO2 concentrations. The adsorption capacity of SO2 is also significantly enhanced at cold temperatures. With an initial concentration of SO2 = 1000 ppmv, the specific capacity increases from 12.9 to 123.1 mg/g when the temperature decreases from 80 to – 20 ℃. A novel low-temperature adsorption (LAS) process is developed to simultaneously remove SO2 and NOx from flue gas with a target of near-zero emission. A pilot-scale testing platform with a flue gas flowrate of 3600 Nm3/h is developed and tested. Emission of both SO2 and NOx is less than 1 ppmv, and the predicted energy penalty is about 3% of the net generation.
