The Ideal

High-efficiency nanofocusing of hard X-rays using stacked multilevel Fresnel zone plates with a smallest zone width of 200 nm is demonstrated. The approach is to approximate the ideal parabolic lens profile with two-, three-, four- and six-level zone plates. By stacking binary and three-level zone plates with an additional binary zone plate, the number of levels in the optical transmission function was doubled, resulting in four- and six-level profiles, respectively. Efficiencies up to 53.7% focusing were experimentally obtained with 6.5 keV photons using a compact alignment apparatus based on piezoelectric actuators. The measurements have also been compared with numerical simulations to study the misalignment of the two zone plates.

AbstractFresnel zone plates consisting of multiple concentric rings have been realized by tailoring amplitude, phase and polarization of light, but conventional Fresnel zone plates require totally different materials to control each property reducing light controllability. Here, a metasurface zone plate in which rings are composed of subwavelength antenna arrays is proposed to individually control amplitude, phase and polarization by the consistent material platform of metasurfaces. Hence, versatile degrees of freedom can be achieved to focus electromagnetic waves. We verify that dielectric metasurfaces can generate arbitrary poloarization states to cover the whole Poincaré sphere in the visible regime, allowing light manipulation in the vectorial regime, which is not feasible by a conventional single liquid crystal film. Experimental demonstration of a polarization-modulated metasurface zone plate confirms the functional capability of dielectric metasurfaces exhibiting higher focusing efficiency than amplitude-modulated zone plates.

Abstract Extraordinary optical transmission and good focusing properties of a two-dimensional scattering structure is presented. The structure is made of Fresnel zone plates periodically arranged along two orthogonal directions. Each plate consists of two ring-shaped waveguides supporting modes that match the symmetry of a circularly polarized incident plane wave. High field concentration at the focal plane is obtained with the short transverse and long longitudinal foci diameters. Optical vortex excitation in a paraxial region of the transmitted field is also observed and analysed in terms of cross-polarisation coupling. The structure presented may appear useful in visualization, trapping and precise manipulations of nanoparticles.
