A near infrared (NIR) responsive photocatalyst, composed of a narrow band gap semiconductor (i.e. MoS2) and an optical material possessing upconverting ability (i.e. NaYF4:Yb3+/Er3+) has been successfully prepared via a simple hydrothermal method.

Pureα-Bi2O3with nanoneedle array structure was synthesized directly by hydrothermal method. The optic absorption of theα-Bi2O3paricles was cut off at ~483 nm and the band gap of theα-Bi2O3was estimated to be 2.57 eV. The photocatalytic activity of theα-Bi2O3samples was higher than TiO2under a visible light irradiation. As a conclusion, relative narrow band gap ofα-Bi2O3nanoneedle array compared to anatase and the special morphology of nanoneedle array structures may improve the photocatalytic activity in visible light irradiation.

<div>Here we demonstrate an upconversion composition using semiconductor nanocrystal sensitizers that employs molecular triplet states below the singlet oxygen energy. We show that, contrary to the usual expectation, the admission of oxygen enhances the intensity of upconverted light and significantly speeds up the photochemical processes involved. Further, we demonstrate photochemical upconversion from below the silicon band gap in the presence of oxygen.</div>

The reversed growth of 2D core–shell CuFeSe2@Au heterostructured nanosheets with a crystalline shell and an amorphous core were first prepared and show enhanced photocatalytic activity for water oxidation under NIR light irradiation.
