The substitution effect on a series of POM-type ionic liquids, has been investigated. The physicochemical properties of the ILs are highly related to their structures. When protons are substituted for ammonium, high conductivity and better thermostability are observed.

Abstract This paper reports a new method for the determination of aromatic amines with temperature-controlled ionic liquid dispersive liquid-phase microextraction in combination with HPLC and results of investigation of the influence of anions in ionic liquids on the extraction performance. In these experiments, 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C8MIM][PF6]), 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide ([C8MIM][NTf2]), and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C8MIM][BF4]) were used as the extraction solvents for the investigation of the effect of anions in ionic liquids. Other parameters affecting the microextraction performance were also investigated. Under the optimal conditions, the proposed method had good linearity over the concentration ranges of 1.0–100 μg/L for 2, 4-dimethylaniline, 2-chloroanline, and N,N-dimethylaniline, and 1.5–150 μg/L for N,N-dimethylaniline and alpha-naphthylamine, with excellent correlation coefficients (R2 ≥ 0.999), excellent detection sensitivity with LODs (S/N = 3) in the range of 0.39–0.63 μg/L, and precision in the range of 3.2–5.4% RSD (n = 6). Real water samples were analyzed with the established method, and good spike recoveries in the range of 86.3 to 98.9% were obtained. These results indicated that this method would be useful in the routine analysis of such pollutants.

A new series of functionalized ionic liquids containing ester-group were synthesized through a typical two-step way. The physicochemical properties of the functionalized ionic liquids were studied and the tribological properties of them as lubricants for steel-steel contact were evaluated on an SRV friction and wear tester and compared with the perfluoroalkylpolyether (PFPE), a low-volatility and fluorine containing lubricant, and a conventional ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methy imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (LB104), which is nonfunctionalized. Results showed that all the ionic liquids studied in this paper have better lubricities than PFPE as lubricants for steel-steel friction pairs. Functionalized ionic liquids show worse friction reducing abilities at relatively lower loads, which could be ascribed to their higher viscosities, but they always exhibit better anti-wear abilities than LB104. The possible friction mechanisms were discussed.

Ionic liquids can typically be synthesized via protonation, alkylation, metathesis, or neutralization reactions. The many types of ionic liquids have increased their attractiveness to researchers for employment in various areas, including in polymer composites. Recently, ionic liquids have been employed to modify nanofillers for the fabrication of polymer nanocomposites with improved physicochemical properties. In this succinct review, four types of imidazolium-based ionic liquids that are employed as modifiers—specifically alkylimidazolium halide, alkylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, alkylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, and alkylimidazolium bistriflimide—are reviewed. Additionally, three types of ionic liquid-modified nanofiller/polymer nanocomposites—namely ionic liquid-nanofiller/thermoplastic nanocomposites, ionic liquid-nanofiller/elastomer nanocomposites, and ionic liquid-nanofiller/thermoset nanocomposites—are described as well. The effect of imidazolium-based ionic liquids on the thermo-mechanico-chemical properties of the polymer nanocomposites is also succinctly reviewed. This review can serve as an initial guide for polymer composite researchers in modifying nanofillers by means of ionic liquids for improving the performance of polymer nanocomposites.
