The flexibility and structure transition behaviour of ZIF-8 in a series of samples with different particle size has been studied using a combination of high-resolution N2 gas adsorption isotherms and, for the first time, a broad in situ PXRD and Rietveld analysis.

A study of liquid mixing route to synthesize high purity Mg0.8Zn0.2TiO3 nanopowder, a candidate dielectric ceramics, has been successfully performed. Formation of the phases on the dried powder was studied using TG/DTA, XRD and FT-IR data. Rietveld analysis on the collected XRD patterns confirmed the formation of solid solution in the system. Such solid solution can be obtained from the powder calcined at 500 °C, but calcination at 550 °C gave rise to the most optimum molar purity up to 98.5% without intermediate phases. The role of Zn ions on the formation of solid solution was also discussed. Homogeneity of particle size distribution and nano-crystallinity of the system was verified from the particle size analyzer data, TEM image and the Rietveld analysis output.

The optical gas adsorption behaviors of [Zn2(bdc)2(dpNDI)]n membranes were studied for the first time. Under UV light irradiation, they exhibited a greater adsorption response to xylene gas with adsorption capacity of 6.46 μg cm−2 per unit surface.

Supported Rh nanoparticles obtained by reduction in hydrogen of severely calcined Rh/Mg/Al hydrotalcite-type (HT) phases have been characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy of adsorbed CO [both at room temperature (r.t.) and nominal liquid nitrogen temperature] and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The effect of reducing temperature has been investigated, showing that Rh crystal size increases from 1.4 nm to 1.8 nm when the reduction temperature increases from 750°C to 950°C. The crystal growth favours the formation of bridged CO species and linear monocarbonyl species with respect to gem-dicarbonyl species; when CO adsorbs at r.t., CO disproportionation occurs on Rh and it accompanies the formation of RhI(CO)2. The role of interlayer anions in the HT precursors to affect the properties of the final materials has been also investigated considering samples prepared from silicate-instead of carbonate-containing precursors. In this case, formation of RhI(CO)2 and CO disproportionation do not occur, and this evidence is discussed in terms of support effect.

Online analysis of a tribological contact without changing the conditions of the system is a challenging exercise until today. Yet, it is not possible to detect wear and the particle size ith one method. Numerous works study different phenomena of the behavior of ultrasonic structure-borne noise in dry friction contacts. However all these experiments are limited to basic pin-disc experiments without any concrete reference to an application. A new application for detecting real contact-geometry, wear and particle size with one in-situ condition monitoring method on a test rigs is presented in this paper. The method of structure-born noise analysis has proven to be suitable for detecting the occurrence of solid friction [1]–[4]. By using a broadband piezoelectric acoustic emission sensor to detect ultrasonic structure-born noise, caused by metal-to-metal contact it is now possible to study different types of phenomena during their time of appearance. The Radionuclide Technology (RNT) was used the first time at dry running friction systems. With the RNT it is possible to correlate ultrasonic structure-borne noise with wear volume in dry running friction systems. The application is used for deeper understanding of the friction behavior and wear phenomena in dry running contacts.

Encapsulation of biomolecules using Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) to form stable biocomposites has been demonstrated a valuable strategy for their preservation and controlled release, which has been however restricted to specific electrostatic surface conditions. We present a general in situ strategy that promotes the spontaneous MOF growth onto a broad variety of proteins, for the first time, regardless of their surface nature. We demonstrate that MOFs based on cations exhibiting considerable inherent acidity such as MIL-100(Fe) enable biomolecule encapsulation, including alkaline proteins previously inaccesible by the welldeveloped in situ encapsulation with azolate-based MOFs. In particular, MIL-100(Fe) scaffold permits effective encapsulation of proteins with very distinct surface nature, retaining their activity and allowing triggered release under biocompatible conditions. This general strategy will enable an ample use of biomolecules in desired biolotechnological applications.

In the present study we demonstrate for the first time the expression of glycodelin mRNA in the female and male genital tracts of rats using non-radioactive in situ hybridisation. Glycodelin fragment 1 (+41 to +141) shares 100% homology with the human gene sequence. In the ovary, glycodelin mRNA was restricted to granulosa cells. In the uterus, glycodelin mRNA was expressed in all epithelial cells of the endometrium. In the male reproductive tract, glycodelin mRNA was distributed in all epithelial cells of the epididymis, the prostate and the seminal vesicle. However, in the testis, glycodelin mRNA was predominantly found in spermatogonia and in spermatocytes of the seminiferous epithelium. The expression in several reproductive organs of rats offers an excellent tool to study further the physiological role of glycodelin, which is so far thought to act as an immunosuppressive factor.

AbstractSpontaneous instabilities of nanoparticles are known to be influenced by the temperature, and strongly depend on the particle size. However, it is not clear what is the role of the surrounding material that is in contact with the particle. Here we report on the difference between spontaneous rotations of Bi nanoparticles embedded in amorphous SiO and those embedded in liquid Ga. The phenomenon was studied quantitatively by time resolved transmission electron microscopy using Fourier Transform analysis of highresolution electron microscopy images. While rotations of Bi nanoparticles embedded in amorphous SiO occur by all angles, the rotations of Bi nanoparticles embedded in liquid Ga occur by discrete angles. Our results point quantitatively, for the first time, to the role and importance of the contacting surrounding surface during the rotation of nanoparticles.

The role of the circulatory system in the functioning of the subdigital adhesive pads of geckoes has been the subject of much discussion. However, the morphology and configuration of the blood system in the foot has remained poorly understood, rendering functional interpretation of the blood sinuses simplistic. Here the major arterial vessels of the manus are described for the first time and a discussion of their geometry is presented. Due to the paucity of information concerning the arterial system of the appendages of lizards a description of the major vessels of the antebrachium is also given.The data presented are based on the study of material injected with low-viscosity silicone rubber and then cleared so that vessels may be studied in situ. The data are pertinent to subsequent discussions of the microvasculature of the subdigital lamellae and of reconsiderations of their structure and form.
