This work aims to address two major roadblocks in the development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries: the inefficient deposition of Li on the metallic Li electrode and the parasitic "polysulfide redox shuttle". These roadblocks are here approached, respectively, by the combination of a cellulose separator with a cathode-facing conductive porous carbon interlayer, based on their previously reported individual benefits. The cellulose separator increases cycle life by 33%, and the interlayer by a further 25%, in test cells with positive electrodes with practically relevant specifications and a relatively low electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio. Despite the prolonged cycle life, the combination of the interlayer and cellulose separator increases the polysulfide shuttle current, leading to reduced Coulombic efficiency. Based on XPS analyses, the latter is ascribed to a change in the composition of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li. Meanwhile, electrolyte decomposition is found to be slower in cells with cellulose-based separators, which explains their longer cycle life. These counterintuitive observations demonstrate the complicated interactions between the cell components in the Li-S system and how strategies aiming to mitigate one unwanted process may exacerbate another. This study demonstrates the value of a holistic approach to the development of Li-S chemistry.<br>

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are promising alternatives to lithium-based energy storage devices for large-scale applications, but conventional lithium-ion battery anode materials do not provide adequate reversible Na-ion storage. In contrast, conversion-based transition metal sulfides have high theoretical capacities and are suitable anode materials for SIBs. Iron sulfide (FeS) is environmentally benign and inexpensive but suffers from low conductivity and sluggish Na-ion diffusion kinetics. In addition, significant volume changes during the sodiation of FeS destroy the electrode structure and shorten the cycle life. Herein, we report the rational design of the FeS/carbon composite, specifically FeS encapsulated within a hierarchically ordered mesoporous carbon prepared via nanocasting using a SBA-15 template with stable cycle life. We evaluated the Na-ion storage properties and found that the parallel 2D mesoporous channels in the resultant FeS/carbon composite enhanced the conductivity, buffered the volume changes, and prevented unwanted side reactions. Further, high-rate Na-ion storage (363.4 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 2 A g−1, 132.5 mAh g−1 at 20 A g−1) was achieved, better than that of the bare FeS electrode, indicating the benefit of structural confinement for rapid ion transfer, and demonstrating the excellent electrochemical performance of this anode material at high rates.

Electrolyte stability can be improved by incorporating complexing agents that bind key decomposition intermediates and slow down decomposition. We show that hexamethyl-phosphoramide (HMPA) extends both the thermal stability threshold of sodium hexafluorophosphate (NaPF6) in dimethoxyethane (DME) electrolyte and the cycle life of double-layer capacitors. HMPA forms a stable complex with PF5, an intermediate in PF6 anion thermal degradation. Unbound, this intermediate leads to autocatalytic degradation of the electrolyte solution. The results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and galvanostatic cycling measurements show large changes in the cell without the presence of HMPA at higher temperatures (≥60 °C). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) on the liquid and gas phase of the electrolyte shows without HMPA the formation of measurable amounts of PF5 and HF. The complimentary results of these measurements proved the usefulness of using Lewis bases such as HMPA to inhibit the degradation of the electrolyte solution at elevated temperatures and potentially lead to improve cycle life of a nonaqueous capacitor. The results showed a large increase in capacitance retention during cycling (72% retention after 750,000 cycles). The results also provide evidence of major decomposition processes (0% capacitance retention after 100,000 cycles) that take place at higher temperatures without the additive of a thermal stability additive such as HMPA.
