In this work, we compare our experimental results with the latest computational findings for the synthesis of nanoparticles via Laser Ablation in Liquids (LAL). In addition, we demonstrate the usefulness of shadowgraphy imaging of the cavitation bubble in determination of ablation thresholds and irradiation efficiency.

ABSTRACTSpherical aluminum oxide (γ-phase) nanoparticles with sizes below 30 nm were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation in liquids. The wavelength and energy fluence of the nanosecond laser were set at 1064 nm and ∼1x103 J/cm2, respectively. The optimal repetition rate to maximize the production of those nanoparticles was determined to be at 2,129±64 Hz. Therefore, the lifetime of the cavitation bubble was estimated to be around 0.47±0.01 ms.

While doping is crucial for numerous technological applications, its control remains difficult especially when the material is reduced down to the nanometric scale. We suggest a new way to dope nanoparticles using laser ablation in liquids.
