In this study, the resistance to corrosion of niobium-doped tin dioxide (Nb-doped SnO2, NTO) and antimony-doped tin oxide (Sb-doped SnO2, ATO) supports has been probed for proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) application. To achieve this goal, ATO or NTO supports with loose-tube (fiber-in-tube) morphology were synthesized using electrospinning and decorated with platinum (Pt) nanoparticles. These cathode catalysts were submitted to two different electrochemical tests, an accelerated stress test following the EU Harmonised Test Protocols for PEMFC in a single cell configuration and an 850 h test in real air-breathing PEMFC systems. In both cases, the dissolution of the doping element was measured either by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP–MS) performed on the exhaust water or by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (X-EDS) analysis on ultramicrotomed membrane electrode assembly (MEA), and correlated to the performance losses upon ageing. It appears that the NTO-based support leads to lower performances than the ATO-based one, mainly owing to the low electronic conductivity of NTO. However, in the case of ATO, dissolution of the Sb doping element is non-negligible and represents a major issue from a stability point-of-view.

The solvent-based exfoliation of graphite, including into graphene and/or graphene-like platelets, is an important challenge. Here, we report a “direct” Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction between graphite and 4-ethylbenzoic acid (EBA) to afford edge-functionalized graphite (EFG). Unlike, for example, graphite oxide (GO), the functionalization is at the edges of the graphite and thus, the basal plane of individual layers in EFG is not functionalized. The EFG can be easily dispersed and exfoliated in common organic solvents to concentrations as high as 0.8 mg/mL. Large-are uniform films can be produced by solution-casting such dispersions on substrates and conductivities as high as 125 S/cm can be obtained by subsequent heat treatment at 900 °C under argon atmosphere. Hence, a few layers graphene obtained from annealing under argon atmosphere show the potential to replace Indium tin oxide (ITO).

This study on bare and catalysed Sb–SnO2 electrospun tubes allowed to determine the potential window for its optimal utilisation as electrocatalyst support in PEM fuel cells and water electrolysers: the stability of the oxide strongly depends on the existing surface segregation of Sb.

A series of novel polystyrene derivatives with oligofluorene pendants were synthesized by Friedel-Crafts reaction. The structure and properties of the polymers and monomers were characterized using NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy, DSC, photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectroscopy. The content of fluorescent units in OPS (oligofluorene grafted polystyrene) was proportional to the dosage of oligofluorene monomers in a wide scope. All the materials were soluble in common organic solvents and easily spin-coated onto the indium-tin oxide(ITO)-coated glass substrates. The polymers showed good fluorescent properties with comparely wide photoluminescent spectra. This method could be an easy way to obtain non-conjugated fluorescent polymers for photoelectric devices by solution processing. The electroluminescent properties of these polymers were reported briefly in this paper.
