In the present work, we investigate the mechanisms affecting the stability of surfactant-laden thin films during spreading, using drainage flows from a hemispherical dome. Three commercial lung surfactant replacements Survanta, Curosurf and Infasurf, along with the phospholipid dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), are used.

This research studied ways to increase the stability of a polymer thin film with a thickness of approximately 10 nm. Our system consisted of a polystyrene (PS) thin film filled with three arm polystyrene (TAP) as additives. Formation of dewetting was investigated by atomic force microscopy and optical microscopy which showed that complete dewetting of the pure PS film occurs after being annealed at 120 oC for 5 h. The dewetting dynamics were dramatically suppressed when a small amount of TAP polymer was added into the PS thin film. We hypothesize that the nitrogen atom in the TAP polymer provides dipolarity between the polymeric thin films and the substrate followed by an increase in the interfacial interaction of the TAP/PS thin films, which in turn leads to increased film stability. However, if the concentration of TAP is too high, this leads to phase separation of the thin films. We also observed that the amount of TAP within the PS thin film largely affected the efficiency of inhibiting dewetting. This method could be utilized for the study of the mechanism in a blended polymer film.

ABSTRACTDense polycrystalline thin films of ZrO2 (3 and 8 mol% Y2O3) were produced by the pyrolysis of zirconium acetate precursor films, which were deposited on single crystal Al2O3 substrates by spin-coating solutions of zirconium acetate. With grain growth, these films broke into islands of ZrO2 grains. Thermodynamic calculations show that this break up lowers the free energy of the system. These calculations also predict the conditions needed for polycrystalline thin film stability.

The thermodynamic equilibrium of structures consisting of a thin film silicide (TiSi2 or CoSi2) on doped Si (with As or B) is investigated. Isothermal sections of the ternary phase diagrams for Ti–Si–B, Co–Si–B, Ti–Si–As, and Co–Si–As have been evaluated, indicating the stability of high B concentrations in Si underneath a CoSi2 layer, the instability of high As concentrations in Si underneath a CoSi2 layer, and of B and As concentrations underneath a TiSi2 layer. The obtained thermodynamic predictions agree very well with experimental results (i) on the redistribution of dopants during silicide formation, (ii) on the diffusion of dopants from an ion implanted silicide, and (iii) on the stability of highly doped regions underneath the silicide, both for the case of TiSi2 and CoSi2. It is shown that even though the inaccuracy of reported thermodynamic data is substantial, thermodynamic calculations provide a useful guidance and are consistent with the experimental results.

ABSTRACTEXAFS is used to measure the local atomic structure of Fe in Au doped Tb-Fe thin film alloys. The as deposited sample shows structural fcatures which are essentially identical to those of the undoped films. Au additions stabilizes the amorphous structure against recrystallization, however, the loss of magnetic anisotropy under thermal annealing is not reduced. This demonstrates that magnetic relaxation in these alloys does not involve crystallization of the amorphous structure.
