Direct splitting of pure water into H2and O2in a stoichiometric molar ratio of 2 : 1 by conjugated polymersviaa 4-electron pathway was established for the first time, as demonstrated here using a g-C3N4polymer and redox co-catalysts of Pt and Co species.

We perform a high-throughput computational screening of a set of 3240 conjugated alternating binary co-polymers and homo-polymers, in which we predict their ability to drive sacrificial hydrogen evolution and overall water splitting when illuminated with visible light. We use the outcome of this screening to analyse how common the ability to drive either reaction is for conjugated polymers loaded with suitable co-catalysts, and to suggest promising (co-)monomers for polymeric overall water splitting catalysts.

2D porous MnIn2Se4 nanosheets have been synthesized for the first time via a simple hydrothermal method. The intrinsic property of the hitherto unexplored MnIn2Se4 for photocatalytic water splitting was clearly studied, and the H2 evolution rate reached 35 μmol g−1 h−1 in pure water.

Noble metal free g-C3N4 based photocatalysts find promising applications in the fields of photocatalytic H2 production, overall water splitting and CO2 reduction. Their photocatalytic can be enhanced by depositing non-noble metal co-catalysts and exfoliation to nanosheets.
