Using zinc acetate, glycerol alcohol and sodium hydroxide as principal raw materials, the ZnO microspheres were prepared by hydrothermal method at 200°C. The samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Using methyl orange as the degradation object, the photocatalytic activities and recycling stability of ZnO were characterized. The results show that ZnO samples are spherical and the average diameter is approximately 3-4μm. Moreover, the bandgap width is 3.1eV. Under ultraviolet light irradiation, it is testified that ZnO shows a excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of methyl orange. From experience, we can draw a conclusion that the ZnO samples were in line with first-order kinetics, with an apparent rate constant of 0.016min-1. At the same time, ZnO showed excellent recycling performance. Although the samples have been recycled three times, it still maintained high photocatalytic activity.

BiOCl/SnS2 core-shell heterojunction is prepared by a facile and economic hydrothermal method. The obtained BiOCl/SnS2 heterojunction displays high photocatalytic activity in the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The high performance is explained by the fast separation of the photoinduced electron–hole pairs promoted by the heterojunction. The cycle life of the heterojunction is also improved compared with individual BiOCl or SnS2.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N[Formula: see text] has drawn increasing interest as an efficient photocatalyst. To further improve its photocatalytic activity, herein we coupled g-C3N4 with graphene to construct ultrathin g-C3N4/graphene (g-C3N4/G) nanocomposites by a pyrolysis-sonication-hydrothermal method. Under the illumination of visible-light, g-C3N4/G nanocomposites with 10[Formula: see text]wt.%G can degrade 92% Rhodamine B (RhB) in 120[Formula: see text]min, which is higher than that (57%) from pure g-C3N4. Moreover, the recycling experiment indicates that the nanocomposite still remains excellent photocatalytic stability. Therefore, g-C3N4/G nanocomposites exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity and stability, resulting in a promising application in water purification.

The microsphere Bi2WO6has been synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method by using Bi (NO3)35H2O, H40N10O41W125H2O and CO(NH2)2(urea) as the starting materials. The as-synthesized Bi2WO6was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM),BET and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The visible-light-responsive photocatalytic activity of Bi2WO6microspheres was evaluated by the photo-degradation of RhB under Xe lamp irradiation. The degradation is up to 96% in 3h. The results show that microsphere Bi2WO6exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity. The reasons for the high photocatalytic activity have been discussed carefully.

CuS hexagonal nanosheet/graphene was fabricated by a facile one-pot microwave-thermal method. The samples possess excellent photocatalytic activity for degradation of organic pollutant under visible light. The high photocatalytic activity was attributed to the deposition of CuS hexagonal nanosheet onto graphene. CuS nanosheet serves as a transporter which efficiently inhibits the recombination of the photo-induced charge carriers in the nanocomposites. The developed method demonstrates a facile approach towards the synthesis of two-dimensional semiconductor-graphene nanocomposites with excellent photocatalytic performance under visible light.
