Kynurenic acid (KYN; systematic name: 4-hydroxyquinoline-2-carboxylic acid, C10H7NO3) displays a therapeutic effect in the treatment of some neurological diseases and is used as a broad-spectrum neuroprotective agent. However, it is understudied with respect to its solid-state chemistry and only one crystal form (α-KYN·H2O) has been reported up to now. Therefore, an attempt to synthesize alternative solid-state forms of KYN was undertaken and six new species were obtained: five solvates and one salt. One of them is a new polymorph, β-KYN·H2O, of the already known KYN monohydrate. All crystal species were further studied by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, thermal and spectroscopic methods. In addition to the above methods, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), in-situ variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction and Raman microscopy were applied to characterize the phase behaviour of the new forms. All the compounds display a zwitterionic form of KYN and two different enol–keto tautomers are observed depending on the crystallization solvent used.

AbstractThe in-situ stabilization of Ag nanoparticles is carried out by the use of reducing agent and synthesized three different types of hydrogen (anionic, cationic, and neutral) template. The morphology, constitution and thermal stability of the synthesized pure and Ag-entrapped hybrid hydrogels were efficiently confirmed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The prepared hybrid hydrogels were used in the decolorization of methylene blue (MB) and azo dyes congo red (CR), methyl Orange (MO), and reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and nitrobenzene (NB) by an electron donor NaBH4. The kinetics of the reduction reaction was also assessed to determine the activation parameters. The hybrid hydrogen catalysts were recovered by filtration and used continuously up to six times with 98% conversion of pollutants without substantial loss in catalytic activity. It was observed that these types of hydrogel systems can be used for the conversion of pollutants from waste water into useful products.

In this work, a mixing-calcination method was developed to facilely construct MXene/CuO nanocomposite. CuO and MXene were first dispersed in ethanol with sufficient mixing. After solvent evaporation, the dried mixture was calcinated under argon to produce a MXene/CuO nanocomposite. As characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), CuO nanoparticles (60–100 nm) were uniformly distributed on the surface and edge of MXene nanosheets. Furthermore, as evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), the high-temperature decomposition (HTD) temperature decrease of ammonium perchlorate (AP) upon addition of 1 wt% CuO (hybridized with 1 wt% MXene) was comparable with that of 2 wt% CuO alone, suggesting an enhanced catalytic activity of CuO on thermal decomposition of AP upon hybridization with MXene nanosheets. This strategy could be further applied to construct other MXene/transition metal oxide (MXene/TMO) composites with improved performance for various applications.

The reaction of the bulk glass forming alloy Zr41Ti14Cu12Ni10Be23 (Vit 1) with W, Ta, Mo, AlN, Al2O3, Si, graphite, and amorphous carbon was investigated. Vit 1 samples were melted and subsequently solidified after different processing times on discs of the different materials. Sessile drop examinations of the macroscopic wetting of Vit 1 on the discs as a function of temperature were carried out in situ with a digital optical camera. The reactions at the interfaces between the Vit 1 sample and the different disc materials were investigated with an electron microprobe. The structure and thermal stability of the processed Vit 1 samples were examined by x-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The results are discussed in terms of possible applications for composite materials.

Current research work was carried out for gastro-protective delivery of naproxen sodium. Polyethylene glycol-g-poly (methacrylic acid) nanogels was developed through free radical polymerization technique. Formulation was characterized for swelling behaviour, entrapment efficiency, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Zeta size distribution, and Zeta potential measurements, and in-vitro drug release. pH dependent swelling was observed with maximum drug release at higher pH. PXRD studies confirmed the conversion of loaded drug from crystalline to amorphous form while Zeta size measurement showed size reduction. On the basis of these results it was concluded that prepared nanogels proved an effective tool for gastro-protective delivery of naproxen sodium.

The organic–inorganic hybrid compound 4-aminopyridinium tetraaquabis(sulfato)iron(III), (C5H7N2)[FeIII(H2O)4(SO4)2] (4apFeS), was obtained by slow evaporation of the solvent at room temperature and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in the temperature range from 290 to 80 K. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed that the title compound undergoes a sequence of three reversible phase transitions, which has been verified by variable-temperature X-ray diffraction analysis during cooling–heating cycles over the temperature ranges 290–100–290 K. In the room-temperature phase (I), space group C2/c, oxygen atoms from the closest Fe-atom environment (octahedral) were disordered over two equivalent positions around a twofold axis. Two intermediate phases (II), (III) were solved and refined as incommensurately modulated structures, employing the superspace formalism applied to single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. Both structures can be described in the (3+1)-dimensional monoclinic X2/c(α,0,γ)0s superspace group (where X is ½, ½, 0, ½) with modulation wavevectors q = (0.2943, 0, 0.5640) and q = (0.3366, 0, 0.5544) for phases (II) and (III), respectively. The completely ordered low-temperature phase (IV) was refined with the twinning model in the triclinic P{\overline 1} space group, revealing the existence of two domains. The dynamics of the disordered anionic substructure in the 4apFeS crystal seems to play an essential role in the phase transition mechanisms. The discrete organic moieties were found to be fully ordered even at room temperature.

Crystallographic observation of adsorbed gas molecules is a highly difficult task due to their rapid motion. Here, we report the in situ single-crystal and synchrotron powder X-ray observations of reversible CO2 sorption processes in an apparently nonporous organic crystal under varying pressures at high temperatures. The host material is formed by hydrogen bond network between 1,3,5-tris-(4-carboxyphenyl)benzene (H3BTB) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and by π–π stacking between the H3BTB moieties. The material can be viewed as a well-ordered array of cages, which are tight packed with each other so that the cages are inaccessible from outside. Thus, the host is practically nonporous. Despite the absence of permanent pathways connecting the empty cages, they are permeable to CO2 at high temperatures due to thermally activated molecular gating, and the weakly confined CO2 molecules in the cages allow direct detection by in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 323 K. Variable-temperature in situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction studies also show that the CO2 sorption is reversible and driven by temperature increase. Solid-state magic angle spinning NMR defines the interactions of CO2 with the organic framework and dynamic motion of CO2 in cages. The reversible sorption is attributed to the dynamic motion of the DMF molecules combined with the axial motions/angular fluctuations of CO2 (a series of transient opening/closing of compartments enabling CO2 molecule passage), as revealed from NMR and simulations. This temperature-driven transient molecular gating can store gaseous molecules in ordered arrays toward unique collective properties and release them for ready use.

AbstractCombining laboratory X-ray powder diffraction with in-situ high-temperature synchrotron experiments and differential scanning calorimetry, it has been shown that Ba21Al40, Ba3Al5, Ba7Al10 and Ba4Al5 decompose peritectically at 914, 826, 756, and 732°C, respectively. In addition, a new binary compound with the composition Ba4Al7+x (x = 0.17) and the formation temperature of 841°C was found. The initial structural model (space group P63/mmc, a = 6.0807(1), c = 39.2828(8) Å) with four Ba and five Al crystallographic positions was developed. It is based on the intergrowth concept involving the neighboring Ba21Al40 and Ba3Al5 phases and the derived atomic arrangement is subsequently refined using X-ray diffraction data. The crystal structures of all phases in the Ba–Al system, except BaAl4, exhibit Kagomé nets of aluminum atoms resembling those observed for the B atoms in the Laves phases AB2. In the crystal structure of Ba4Al7+x, single Kagomé layers alternate with double slabs (MgZn2 motif) along [001] and are separated by Ba cations. Intergrowth features of Ba4Al7+x are discussed together with the neighboring Ba–Al compounds and Sr5Al9.

This research aims to form particles of hematite (α-Fe2O3) with a basis of mineral iron ore Fe3O4 from Tanah Laut. Magnetite Fe3O4 was synthesized using co-precipitation method. Further characterization using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to obtain the percentage of the elements, obtained an iron content of 98.51%. Then characterized using thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC) to determine the calcination temperature, that at a temperature of 445 °C mass decreased by 0.369% due to increase in temperature. Further Characterization of X-ray diffraction (XRD) to determine the phases formed at the calcination temperature variation of 400 °C, 445 °C, 500 °C and 600 °C with a holding time of 5 hours to form a single phase α-Fe2O3 hematite. Testing with a particle size analyzer (PSA) to determine the particle size distribution, where test results indicate that the α-Fe2O3 phase of each having a particle size of 269.7 nm, 332.2 nm, 357.9 nm, 412.2 nm. The best quantity is shown at a temperature of 500 °C to form the hematite phase. This result is used as the calcination procedure to obtain a source of Fe ions in the manufacture of Lithium Ferro Phosphate.
