The volatile fatty acids from kitchen waste were used as substrates of anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria (APB) in a dark-photo fermentation reactor, and anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) was firstly applied to boost the biomass yield.

Isolated lactobacillus sp.(from cheese whey) was examined for its ability to produce bacteriocin like nisin in submerged fermentation and aqueous two-phase system(ATPS) at pH 6.5, 30.C for 18 h fermentation using M17S medium with 5%(v/v) inoculum and the nisin yields were obtained 4500 IU/ml and 20216 IU/ml where as biomass yield obtained 19.55 mg/ml and 31.88 mg/ml respectively. The maximum yield of nisin (24800 IU/ml) and biomass (22.49 mg/ml) were obtained in ATPS (28% PEG 6000 and 4% MgSO4.7H20 with 5-times concentrated M17 medium containing 0.5% lactose as carbon source) under similar conditions.

We present a method of continuous electroextraction of amino acids using aqueous two phase system in a microchip. The separations occur due to differences in electrophoretic mobility and solvent affinity. The results suggest the possibility of high levels of purification by controlling the electric field across the liquid barrier.

Thermophilic (55°C) anaerobic digestion of wastewaters from wet carbonization of Minnesota peat was conducted in a simple, upflow digester at an HRT of one day to provide a methane yield of 0.20 SCM/kg VS added and a BOD5 reduction of 85%. Carbonization of Maine peat conducted for a much longer duration of thermal treatment produced recalcitrant and potentially toxic end products that reduced the biodegradability of wastewaters. Methane fermentation of the Maine-peat wet-carbonization waste was inhibited at an HRT of one day in the single-stage digester. However, two-phase digestion with separate acid-phase fermentation to promote hydrolytic degradation of toxic end products followed by separate methane fermentation at an HRT of 2 days exhibited a methane yield of 0.21 SCM/kg VS added and a BOD5 reduction of 76%. Volatile fatty acids profiles along the depths digesting cultures indicated that single-stage and two-phase digestion could be accomplished at one-half the reactor residence times (one day for single-stage and three days for two-phase) used in this research.
