We demonstrate the use of tetrabutyl ammonium fluoride (TBAF) for creating spatial patterns of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) brushes on a flat silica support by degrafting PMMA grafted chains from selected regions on the substrate.

We demonstrate a novel approach to fabricate three dimensional (3-D) surface patterns atop poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). This approach utilizes both shape recovery behavior and swelling phenomenon of the PMMA. The simplicity in the fabrication process affirms the low-cost nature of this approach. Moreover, as obtained 3-D patterned PMMA sample can be used as artificial compound eye.

The synthesis of polymer brushes containing poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) chains grafted from hydroxyapatite (HAP) particles was disscussed. Surface of commercially available hydroxyapatite was first modified with atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator and hydrophobized with isobutyric acid, and then surface-initiated ATRP was conducted. Properties of obtained hybrids were studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Polymers with various molecular weight up toMn=96,100 g/mol were obtained with good control;Mw/Mn<1.2. Copolymer brushes of poly (methyl methacrylate-stat-benzophenone methacrylate) (P(MMA-stat-BPMA) were also synthesized and cross-linking ability of such materials under UV radiation was confirmed.

The thermal conductivities of both disordered and self-assembled symmetric polystyrene-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) copolymer films were measured using time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR). The variation in out-of-plane thermal conductivity with changing block copolymer thickness is similar to that of PMMA polymer brushes and thick spun-cast films. The results suggest that the interfaces between the PS and PMMA, and reorganization of the PS and PMMA chains around these interfaces, do not significantly affect the thermal transport in these PS-b-PMMA films. However, for thin PS-b-PMMA films, the thermal boundary resistances at the sample interfaces limit the thermal transport.
